Original Title: "Nikita Bier Bids Farewell to X Product Frontline, What Does He Leave Behind?"
Original Author: KarenZ, Foresight News
Describing his move as stepping down to a mere "poster," Nikita Bier announced his departure from the X product frontline.
In the early hours of August 6th, Beijing time, Nikita Bier revealed he was stepping away from his product role at X but would remain as an advisor. Transitioning from "posting his way to the top" by the end of June 2025, to returning from the X timeline approximately 13 months later, he hasn't entirely parted ways with X but has relinquished the position of product lead, which he described as a "24/7 job."
Nikita Bier stated, "Serving the X community has been a 'once-in-a-lifetime honor,' but managing this app requires being online 24 hours a day. It's time to take a breather."
This statement is in line with his style. When Bier joined X in July 2025, he jokingly referred to himself as having "officially posted his way to the top"; about 13 months later, he once again "downgraded" himself to a poster.

What Nikita Bier referred to as "posting his way to the top" was not merely a joke. He consistently treated X as a public product notebook, frequently sharing insights on consumer app growth, user retention, data analytics, and social product design. He would also directly address user inquiries about X features and algorithms. In 2022, during Elon Musk's push for acquiring Twitter, he openly posted a self-recommendation, aspiring to lead Twitter's product efforts. By 2025, he had indeed become the Head of Product at X. Reflecting on his appointment, Bier summarized this journey as "officially posting his way to the top."
As of now, X has not announced a direct replacement for Nikita Bier as the new Head of Product. In his farewell post, Bier specifically mentioned three team leads who will continue to drive relevant initiatives: X's Design Lead Benji Taylor, Core Product Engineering Lead Singhai, and Mobile Engineering Lead Jonah Katz.
However, this is only Nikita Bier's explanation of the existing team's responsibilities. As of now, X has not officially disclosed Nikita Bier's successor.
In his stepping down statement, Nikita Bier stated that over the past approximately 400 days, X has revamped the timeline, Android app, new user onboarding, notifications, and chat modules, and has rolled out nearly 30 new products.
Notable changes include a revamped recommended timeline, the introduction of a Grok-powered custom timeline, enhanced group chat capabilities in XChat, updates to the video creation tool, and the completion of a rewrite of the Android app in July 2026.
At the time, Nikita Bier referred to the Android rewrite as one of the largest engineering projects in X's history, stating that the primary goal of the new app was not only to improve speed and stability but also to enable faster feature delivery on the Android platform.
These adjustments also align with Nikita Bier's previously discussed product philosophy. He once posted that when a person is willing to use a social app, developers should view it as a "miracle," where every user click is invaluable; if an action cannot either improve the network or bring value to other users, it will ultimately harm the product.
In terms of account transparency, in 2025 X introduced the "About This Account" feature, allowing users to view information such as the account's country or region, registration date, and username changes. Nikita Bier referred to this as the first step in maintaining the authenticity of the "global public square."
Regarding growth, Bier stated in his stepping down statement that X's new user acquisition and engagement are hitting record highs, with the App Store ranking climbing 70 positions compared to a year ago.
The most visually impactful product Nikita Bier left for Crypto Twitter is Smart Cashtags.
A regular Cashtag is simply an asset tag like "$BTC" or "$SOL," but the same code could correspond to a stock, token, or multiple identically named crypto assets. X introduced Smart Cashtags in 2026, allowing users to post or search for specific assets, even inputting smart contract addresses directly; upon clicking the tag, users can view real-time prices, market charts, and posts mentioning that asset within X.
Upon releasing this feature, Nikita Bier summarized that X has always been a vital platform for traders and investors to acquire financial information, with daily financial decisions heavily influenced by timeline content, and Smart Cashtags are just the first step of X serving the financial and crypto community.
The significance of Smart Cashtags lies in connecting the originally scattered market discussions, asset identification, and price data on the platform. Especially in the cryptocurrency market where there are many tokens with the same name, utilizing contract address to confirm specific assets can reduce instances of mislabeling and misinformation.
This direction is also related to his personal experience. Prior to joining X, Bier was already a Solana ecosystem advisor, mainly helping expand its mobile app ecosystem. X's design lead Benji Taylor, who joined in 2026, also has a prominent cryptocurrency product background: he was responsible for the design of Base Network under Coinbase, founded the self-custodial wallet Family, and served as the Chief Product Officer at Aave after Aave acquired Family.
Nikita Bier is not entirely lenient on Web 3 content. In January 2026, he announced a modification to X's developer API policy, discontinuing the allowance for third-party apps to incentivize users to post through tokens, points, or other economic rewards. This policy directly impacted InfoFi products like Kaito and Cookie DAO that adopted a "post to earn" model. The reason given by Bier was that such incentives resulted in a large amount of AI-generated low-quality content and spam replies.
It is worth noting that X later reestablished formal data collaboration with Kaito. On July 23, Kaito AI announced that it has signed a data agreement with X to support various application scenarios. Kaito did not disclose the data scope, fees, or specific products involved in the agreement, so it cannot be inferred from this that X has reverted to Kaito's original Yaps model or lifted the restrictions on "post to earn" products. This partnership agreement was announced less than two weeks before Nikita Bier stepped down.
Nikita Bier's career path is not the traditional route of a large company executive. He is more like a serial entrepreneur who repeatedly creates small apps, experiences continuous failures, and occasionally suddenly sets the entire App Store on fire.
He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, where he created Politify as a student: users could input their own circumstances to compare how different presidential candidates' policies would affect their finances. This product spread rapidly during the 2012 US election. Berkeley records show that Politify reached about 4 million people in its first month online.
What truly made him famous was tbh, launched in 2017. It allowed high school students to anonymously compliment classmates through multiple-choice questions, using "structured input" instead of "free text" to reduce insults and cyberbullying structurally. After three months online, tbh received about 5 million downloads and was later acquired by Facebook.
What's even more interesting is that tbh wasn't the first app he came up with out of the blue. He later shared at Berkeley that the team had shut down 14 failed products before stumbling upon this model.
Years later, he rehashed the play of anonymous compliments, campus relationships, and paid profile views into Gas. Gas was launched in the summer of 2022 and was acquired by Discord in January 2023. According to TechCrunch at the time, from its launch to the acquisition, Gas had accumulated about 7.4 million installations. Before being acquired by Discord, the Gas team consisted of only 4 people.
In 2025, he also created a tool called Explode, an iMessage ephemeral reading tool. Before and after joining X, he also served as a product growth partner at Lightspeed Venture Partners and became an advisor to Solana in March 2025.
This experience also explains why X trusted him with product responsibility: Nikita Bier may not be the most typical platform manager, but he is very familiar with why people click, why they stick around, and why they are willing to pass a product on to a friend.
Today, he has stepped down from his role as X's product lead but has not left X. In his own words, this is about managing timelines, going back to the timeline.
