BlockBeats news, October 22: a16z announced it is removing "Crypto" from the name of its flagship blockchain fund, renaming it "a16z Frontier," alongside news that longtime general partner Ali Yahya is departing. This move is not an abandonment of crypto investing but rather a step to further broaden the investment scope.
The fund had previously raised nearly $10 billion in total, including $4.5 billion in 2022 and this year's $2.2 billion Fund 5, making it one of the largest institutions in the industry. When raising Fund 5 this year, a16z explicitly stated that the industry is shifting from a "price cycle" to a "usage cycle," with a focus on stablecoins, on-chain finance, prediction markets, and asset tokenization infrastructure adoption, rather than simply chasing market trends.
The removal of "Crypto" from the name is not an abandonment of crypto but a signal of further broadening the investment scope. a16z crypto founder and managing partner Chris Dixon remains in place, and crypto asset and blockchain-related investments remain one of the core focuses, but the overall branding and strategic focus have clearly shifted to cover a broader range of frontier technology sectors, giving the fund greater flexibility while retaining its existing strengths.
