In the latest podcast hosted by famous podcaster Joe Rogan, Elon Musk was a guest and discussed many current events. The eagle-eyed member of the Ordinals community, @LeonidasNFT, noticed that "crypto enthusiast" Elon Musk mentioned some new views on NFTs during the two-and-a-half-hour podcast. This is not the first time Elon Musk has commented on NFTs; over a year ago, Elon Musk tweeted a dig at "bored apes" BAYC.

"NFT is not even on the blockchain, it's just a URL for a JPEG, and most NFTs are like this. This is because Ethereum's NFT ERC-721 standard is the most widely adopted NFT standard, which is a digital certificate or pointer standard. You should at least encode the JPEG on the blockchain, because if the company that stores the image goes bankrupt, you will no longer own the image," said Elon Musk in a podcast.

As a guardian of art on the chain, how could the Ordinals community miss such an opportunity to speak up? Member of the Ordinals community, @CryptoShira, calls out: "Do the Ordinals fam have anything to say?"

Pizzalabs founder c00k1e refuted Elon Musk's view: "You know a little about NFTs, but not much. NFTs are just URLs to JPEGs, and they can still be fully on-chain."

TheOrdinalShow organizer Jan said: "NFT may just be the URL of a JPEG, but #Ordinals is different. This image will now exist forever on Bitcoin."

Although this statement is criticizing NFT, it still excites the Ordinals community. In the community's view, he perfectly expressed the value of Ordinals. Zach, co-founder of Ord_io, said: "Elon Musk perfectly explained the value of Ordinals and inscriptions, and we hope our content can be put on the chain." Elon Musk may have already traded Ordinals, Zach speculated.

In June, during the peak of the bull market, Azuki's floor price was over 30 ETH. However, they chose to release their Elements series during the NFT bear market, which sparked a series of "boycotts" within the community. Initially, the community questioned the high degree of overlap between Elements and Azuki. However, as more and more Elements were released, many holders discovered that their Elements looked exactly the same as those of other holders, not just highly overlapping, but completely identical.

The five sets of completely identical numbers are: #2210 and #10744; #1077 and #8600; #16046 and #8914; #16580 and #5613; #19697 and #2475. The community also discovered that not only are the front-end images displayed by Elements' NFT identical, but even the names of the images saved are also the same.

Later, BlockBeats found that when querying the Elementals series contract, some NFT's tokenURL could not display the query results. At the same time, some preview images of Elementals series NFTs cannot be displayed properly on platforms such as Blur. The Azuki team conducted a real-time "image replacement live broadcast" in front of the community. The NFTs that have already been uploaded to the chain and minted were replaced and modified, which has been criticized by the community for a long time.
And this issue has always been a core topic of discussion in the Ordinals community. Returning to January 21st of this year, Casey Rodarmor, a core contributor to Bitcoin, released version 0.4.0 of the Ordinals protocol, officially bringing NFTs onto the Bitcoin mainnet.
The Ordinals protocol has a numbering scheme that supports tracking and transferring the smallest unit of Bitcoin, Satoshi. Different Satoshis are numbered in the order they are mined and are transferred from transaction inputs to transaction outputs in a first-in, first-out order. Once each Satoshi has a unique number as an identity, it can be tracked or traded individually. Based on this, data such as images, text, SVG, HTML, etc. can be written into each Satoshi, completing the transformation from a "Bitcoin minimum unit" to a "Bitcoin NFT".
The most important thing is that these Bitcoin NFTs do not support off-chain data referencing. In other words, all the data contained in Bitcoin NFTs is completely stored on the chain and will not be lost due to centralized off-chain storage issues, nor can it be changed.

The CEO of TurtleMoonCC, @TMCC_Patches, has expressed his views on Elon Musk's comments: "1) IPFS is not a company, it is a distributed node network; 2) it will not go bankrupt, just like Bitcoin. All nodes need to be shut down; 3) Ordinals have a 4mb limit, and most media formats require more storage space; both tools are suitable for different solutions."
As a well-established NFT ecosystem, ETH NFT has also had in-depth discussions on many issues and has been answered by the market. "Immutable" or "on-chain storage" seems to be a "technical issue", but it is actually a "market issue". There has been a discussion on this issue on ETH for a long time.
For ETH, "whole-chain NFT" is not a new thing. I can quickly come up with several project names in my mind - Autoglyphs, Larva Lads, Chain Runners, and OnChain Monkeys, which are also active in Bitcoin NFT now.
Retrieve the tokenURI of Autoglyphs and you will find a long string. By breaking down this string, a picture can be generated.

Retrieve the tokenURI of Larva Lads and you will find a long string of characters, but the type definition is JSON and the content is a base64 string. Larva Lads has built-in decoding and rendering operations in the contract to ultimately output an SVG image.

Finally, from an optimistic perspective, Elon Musk's comments on the "mockery" of NFTs also indirectly indicate that more and more people are beginning to pay attention to and invest in NFTs. For ensuring the authenticity and permanence of works, Ordinals and other NFT projects provide different answers. Those of us involved will all be witnesses to the history of NFTs.
