TLDR:

The upgrade could be extended into the second quarter; The withdrawal address shall be submitted first and cannot be changed. No Gas fee is required during the withdrawal process. The pledge reward will be automatically paid to the account every few days; When the pledge node is completely exited, it needs to queue up to the extractable state before waiting for cleaning.

Ethereum will support ETH pledge drawdown through the Shanghai/Capella upgrade, and the impending upgrade has also seen a surge in the liquid pledge derivatives (LSD) circuit. Ethereum website for the Shanghai upgrade of the withdrawal informationupdateWhat are the points worth noting?

1. Upgrade time

According to the latest description on Ethereum.org, completing the withdrawal requires a Shanghai upgrade on the executive layer and a Capella upgrade on the Consensus layer, which is expected to take place in the first half of 2023. This is slightly different from the first quarter (March) as previously understood, which means the upgrade could now be pushed back to the second quarter as well.

2. The way of extracting rewards

The reward is automatically withdrawn every few days, no Gas fee is required, the withdrawal address is provided first, and cannot be changed. The verifier of Ethereum is required to pledge 32 ETH. If the verifier gets a block reward, the balance will increase, but the higher balance does not increase the verifier's weight on the network, so the reward will be automatically extracted every few days, and no additional work is required except providing a withdrawal address. These work is initiated at the consensus level without the transfer of Gas fees, which is also the form of transaction where Ethereum extracts pledge incentives for new R&D for ETH.

Note that some pledgers may not provide a withdrawal address when initially setting up the pledged deposit, which will require an updated withdrawal certificate. You can refer to the operation instructions of Zhejiang Test network. The verifier's withdrawal address cannot be revoked or changed after it is submitted to the beacon chain. Not providing an address poses no threat to funds prior to the withdrawal, only keeping ETH locked in the verifier account.

3. Completely withdraw from the pledge

The complete withdrawal of the pledge is a two-step process.

First, the verifier must provide the withdrawal address, sign and broadcast the "voluntary withdrawal" message with the verifier key, and start the process of withdrawing the pledge. This step is done by the verifier client and delivered to the beacon node without gas. Exactly when you can quit depends on how many people quit at the same time.

When the queue is complete, the account is marked as "extractable". You can wait for the automatic "cleaning" process to take place after you provide the withdrawal certificate.

4. How does the withdrawal work?

Whether the verifier is eligible to withdraw depends on the state of the verifier account itself. This process does not require user input to determine whether an account should initiate withdrawals -- the entire process is done automatically by the consensus layer in successive "sweeps."

Verifier "sweep"

When a verifier is scheduled to propose the next block, it needs to set up a withdrawal queue of up to 16 eligible withdrawals. This is done by initially starting at the validator index 0, determining whether the account has qualified withdrawals according to protocol rules, and adding them to the queue if so. The prover proposing the next block will pick up where the last block left off, indefinitely in order.

During the validator's lifecycle, the validator requires only two operations:

Provide withdrawal vouchers to enable the withdrawal;

If you exit the network, complete exit is triggered.

Neither form of drawdown requires gas and does not compete for existing execution-level block space.

5. How often do you get the pledge reward?

A block can handle up to 16 withdrawals. Blocks are "swept" at this rate, whether fully extracted or just extracted rewards, so 115,200 verifier withdrawals can be processed per day (assuming no blocks are missed). This means that a verifier with full withdrawal cannot immediately withdraw the reward once it reaches the "extractable" state and still has to wait for the block to be cleaned.

As mentioned above, validators without qualified withdrawals will be skipped, reducing the time to complete the sweep. Extending this calculation, we can estimate the time it takes to process a given number of withdrawals:

As you can see, as there are more verifiers on the network, the extraction of rewards slows down.
