BlockBeats news, October 22 - StarkWare announced that the Starknet community has completed a non-binding Snapshot vote on "whether to research building Starknet into an independent, quantum-resistant L1." The voting period ran from October 15 to 22, open to STRK stakers and delegators, with 93.52% of voting power in favor, totaling 3,236 votes.
StarkWare and the Starknet Foundation have accordingly launched a working group to research and draft a white paper and detailed proposal. The company emphasized that this vote measures the community's interest in becoming an L1, and any formal decision must still go through subsequent governance procedures.
StarkWare stated that as an Ethereum L2, Starknet relies on Ethereum for cross-chain bridges and data availability, and the relevant components use elliptic curve cryptography susceptible to quantum computing, so full quantum resistance progress is constrained by Ethereum's timeline of approximately 2029. The parts it can control are advancing faster: STARK proofs rely on quantum-resistant hashes, and native account abstraction allows accounts to adopt quantum-resistant signatures without protocol upgrades. If it becomes an independent L1, it can break free from dependence on Ethereum's migration pace. The working group's first major output will be a white paper, expected to be released in the coming weeks, after which a detailed proposal will be submitted for further community voting. Its Quantum Hub roadmap targets full quantum security by 2027.
