BlockBeats news, October 15: The Starknet community has initiated a 7-day non-binding governance vote, asking STRK holders whether they support further research into transitioning Starknet from an Ethereum Layer 2 to an independent quantum-resistant Layer 1. The proposal stems from StarkWare's October 8 announcement that it is exploring this direction, aiming to enhance Starknet's control over its own security architecture.
The proposal notes that Starknet has already adopted hash-based STARK proofs and native account abstraction, allowing user accounts to adopt quantum-resistant signatures without protocol upgrades. However, elements such as Ethereum bridging and data availability still depend on Ethereum, and the pace of quantum-resistant upgrades is constrained by Ethereum's development timeline. Transitioning to an independent L1 is expected to eliminate this dependency.
Regardless of which path is ultimately chosen, STRK will continue to serve as the network token, no new tokens will be issued, and the bridge between Starknet and Ethereum will remain open. If the vote result is in favor, the community will initiate related research and propose a more detailed plan; if opposed, quantum-resistant work will continue under the L2 framework; if neutral, related discussions will remain open until key questions are answered.
