BlockBeats news, September 11 - According to people familiar with the matter, Microsoft (MSFT.O) plans to significantly expand its data center footprint, with global data center capacity expected to exceed 38 gigawatts by 2032, more than tripling from the current approximately 12 gigawatts. The plan aims to alleviate the computing power shortage caused by the rapid growth of AI and cloud businesses in recent years. Microsoft had previously been forced to turn down some AI and cloud service businesses due to insufficient capacity.
The people familiar with the matter said the roadmap includes both Microsoft-built and leased data centers, but does not include computing resources leased from "neocloud" providers such as CoreWeave, and the plans may still be adjusted due to customer demand and technological changes. Microsoft's capital expenditure in its latest fiscal year reached $145 billion, and analysts expect spending to continue growing in the coming years.
Microsoft previously paused some data center construction, leading to limited computing power supply, with some customers turning to competitors. Documents show that Microsoft had restricted new cloud service subscriptions in some key regions in the United States and Europe. Microsoft said it is accelerating data center construction.
