Meta Testing Robot Maintains AI Data Center, Potentially Replacing Some Tech Jobs

BlockBeats News, August 29th, Meta is currently testing robots for maintaining its data centers that support its artificial intelligence system. The use cases include replacing network cables, restarting servers, moving server racks and equipment for inspection, among others. The robots being tested by Meta currently come from Watney Robotics, Kinova, and ABB.

The robots in question still face challenges such as slow operational speed, limited battery life, difficulties in visual detection, and struggles with handling dense cables and complex obstacles, requiring human supervision and assistance. However, a Meta employee estimates that if the cable-replacement robot matures, up to 80% of certain positions may be replaced by machines. This percentage is the employee's personal estimate and not an official prediction from Meta.

As AI infrastructure continues to expand, Meta is on one hand dealing with a shortage of data center technicians and on the other hand exploring robots to reduce operational costs. Meta has stated that the U.S. is experiencing its largest infrastructure building boom since World War II, leading to a severe shortage of technical workers. Therefore, the company believes that it "needs more workers, not fewer."

However, employees are concerned that robots may reduce the need for experienced technical professionals and shift remaining tasks to lower-paid workers who will follow instructions generated by AI. Currently, Meta's robots are still unable to independently perform complex repairs. But their further development may redefine whether AI data center expansion ultimately creates more employment or accelerates the automation of tech positions.
