AI Running Directly on Core Banking Systems? IBM Mainframe Chip Achieves Major Breakthrough: Same Chip Native Support for both IBM and Arm Architectures

Insightful Beating AI News: IBM has unveiled a new generation dual-architecture mainframe processor at the Hot Chips conference, enabling a single chip to natively run both the IBM z/Architecture and Arm instruction set. It can seamlessly switch between the two architectures at a nanosecond-level speed without emulation or translation.


This chip is built on a 2nm process, features 11 cores with a base frequency exceeding 5.7GHz, and integrates an AI inference accelerator. This accelerator can directly perform AI tasks like fraud detection during financial transaction processing. This development means that institutions such as banks can introduce modern AI software into mainframe systems without rewriting decades-old mainframe code or deploying separate AI servers.


IBM stated that this processor is the first significant outcome of its collaboration with Arm, which began in April 2026. By supporting the Arm architecture, IBM mainframes will have direct access to the expansive Arm software ecosystem and AI development frameworks.


Currently, many large financial institutions worldwide heavily rely on mainframe systems. IBM's core strategy with this move is not to replace traditional mainframes but to extend their lifespan by incorporating Arm and AI capabilities. However, the specific release date of this chip has not yet been announced, and commercial deployment will depend on further progress.
