Tesla's Next-Generation Roadster to Be Unveiled This Month: Featuring SpaceX Cold Gas Thrusters, the "Flying" Supercar Launch Nears

According to Dyna Beat's monitoring, citing three sources familiar with the matter, Tesla is preparing for the launch event of the next-generation Roadster, which could take place as early as this month, with the demonstration set to be held at SpaceX's testing facility in McGregor, Texas. This car's "flying" capability comes from a cold gas thruster jointly developed by Tesla and SpaceX. Due to the extremely loud noise of the thrusters, the demonstration vehicle will be remotely controlled with no one inside, and all spectators must stand hundreds of yards away.

Musk has informed some employees in advance: "This demonstration will be very difficult to execute perfectly, there may be mistakes, but in any case, it will be exciting." It is currently unclear whether there will be a live broadcast or a release of recorded footage. Tesla's stock price has fallen by nearly a quarter year-to-date, while the Nasdaq has risen by 15%. The new Roadster is seen as Tesla's signal to the market that, apart from AI and robotics, it is still a serious car manufacturer.

Since its first appearance in 2017, the new Roadster's delivery timeline has been delayed at least eight times. Musk's requirements for the project have continued to escalate — from the fastest production car in history to crazier than all of Bond's cars combined, ultimately stating, "This car must be able to fly." Starting in 2024, the team has worked closely with the SpaceX Starship propulsion team, but the definition of flight has evolved from an airplane to something closer to hovering. The design once paid tribute to the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird reconnaissance aircraft, with the project codenamed "A-71," and the final design incorporates Lamborghini Countach styling.

The limited edition is positioned as extremely niche and is expected to not comply with road regulations, with prices possibly ranging from hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars. Some of the 2017 reservation holders have publicly canceled their orders, including YouTuber Marques Brownlee and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. This car also embodies the deep collaboration between Tesla and SpaceX, with the two companies' cooperation becoming increasingly close in the areas of AI, robotics, and chip manufacturing facilities like Terafab.
