According to Dance Beating monitoring, Andrej Karpathy faced developer ridicule when promoting Anthropic's newly launched collaborative tool, Claude Tag. He later posted on Platform X criticizing the recommendation algorithm for causing community deterioration, which caught Elon Musk's attention and led him to acknowledge the need for a major algorithm overhaul.
The incident started when Anthropic announced that Claude would be directly integrated into Slack as a collaborative member, introducing the collaborative feature Claude Tag. Karpathy tweeted praising Claude Tag as representing a new paradigm of interaction with AI that enables organization-level collaboration. However, some developers on social media mocked Karpathy, claiming he was merely marketing a regular Slack bot.
In response to the controversy, Karpathy stated that critics were quick to make erroneous inferences and comparisons based solely on the headlines. He mentioned that in his nearly two decades of activity on Platform X, he had never seen such a toxic and highly Reddit-like platform environment.
Karpathy pointed out that Platform X's recommendation algorithm actively encourages conflict and negative emotions, with user behavior guided by reinforcement learning (RL) mechanisms, which is the primary reason he has reduced his posting frequency lately. Platform X owner Elon Musk then acknowledged in a reply that X's algorithm indeed needs a complete overhaul to increase the weight of valuable information.
