BlockBeats News, April 13th, according to CCTV International News, Joe Kent, former Director of the U.S. National Counterterrorism Center, stated in a post late night on April 12th local time that negotiations between the U.S. and Iran could have worked, but the demand for "zero enrichment of uranium" led to the breakdown of the talks. He called for sticking to U.S. demands rather than Israel's position to salvage the situation in the remaining 9-day ceasefire window.
Kent said the U.S. government's red line has never been "zero enrichment of uranium," but "Iran not having nuclear weapons," a point Iran also agrees on. Iran has not sought to develop or acquire nuclear weapons since 2003, but Iran needs to retain uranium enrichment capability, making negotiations between the U.S. and Iran feasible. Kent stated that the current priority is to restrain Israel, reach an agreement, and open the Strait of Hormuz.
