OKX Security Series | PoR Chapter: Unlocking the Three-Level Trust Leap: "Verifiability, Soundness, Solvency"

Read this article in 13 Minutes
Source: OKX

Today, as the crypto world gradually integrates into the mainstream financial system, trust remains the foundation of building any value circulation mechanism. However, as the industry expands and architectures evolve, a core issue is gradually emerging: the structural contradiction between user asset custody and verifiability.

Whether it's cross-chain assets, stablecoins, centralized exchanges, or others, when users entrust their assets to intermediaries, questions about asset control, fund ownership, and solvency become the trust threshold. Reserves Proof (PoR), as a mechanism that has been practiced in multiple fields and continues to evolve, is the key to resolving this contradiction. It is far more than just a "show me the money" tool; it is a foundational solution that endows the system with self-evident transparency, risk alerts, and user protection capabilities. OKX, as a global leading exchange and blockchain technology company, is actively promoting the deepening and application of PoR technology.

Scenario One: PoR Transforming from "Trust Intermediary" to "Verification Intermediary"

The birth of cross-chain assets was originally meant to address the fragmentation challenge in the blockchain ecosystem, but its design naturally placed users in a new trust model. Taking WBTC, one of the most liquid wrapped assets of BTC, as an example, it adopts a centralized custody model—users deliver Bitcoin to a custodian in exchange for the wrapped asset on Ethereum. This process relies on BitGo's centralized custody and regular reserve disclosures. BitGo publicly released a proof of assets in 2019, which includes BTC mainnet, Ethereum mainnet addresses, and the total custodied BTC amount, proving to users whether BTC:WBTC has 100% reserve support.

However, this design also indicates that the on-chain assets and native assets are not a 1:1 atomic swap. Users must trust that the intermediary will not make mistakes, will not lose private keys, and will not change custody addresses without disclosure.

Similar challenges also exist in decentralized cross-chain protocols, such as Wormhole, LayerZero, which introduce multi-signatures, validator networks, public contract addresses, and held funds in their design to enhance resistance to manipulation and reduce malicious risks. However, even if the contract code is fully open-source, if the underlying asset reserves lack a mechanism and means of verification, the security is still insufficient to support scalable financial activities.

The essence of this dilemma is the urgent need for transparency and verifiability after users transfer control of their assets. Whether through centralized or decentralized solutions, only through a verifiable reserve proof mechanism can the "trust intermediary" be transformed into a "verification intermediary." The introduction of the OKX PoR mechanism is also based on this goal, strengthening user confidence, and providing a more deterministic and verifiable structure. The self-verification tutorials and tools provided by OKX allow users to independently verify the accuracy and integrity of the data, enabling them to verify whether the custodied assets exist, match, and are retrievable, without solely relying on brand trust from the custodian or controller.

Addressing the core pain point of cross-chain assets, each xBTC introduced by OKX is backed by native BTC, and all key information can be publicly verified on-chain to ensure full transparency. Users can real-time verify the asset transparency through Proof of Reserve (PoR).

Scenario 2: Evolution of PoR from "Proof of Quantity" to "Quality Validation"

Reserve transparency and health have always been key focal points in the crypto industry. All crypto financial companies ultimately need to address whether they have a high-quality reserve, whether they are truly custodied, and whether they can facilitate instant redemption.

For example, Tether (USDT) is one of the most widely circulated stablecoins in the crypto market, emphasizing that each token is always valued at 1 US dollar. However, between 2017 and 2021, Tether faced scrutiny over its reserve structure, the controversy surrounding the high proportion of commercial paper, regulatory investigations, and even led to a brief depegging of USDT in 2022. In recent years, Tether has shifted from exposing itself to commercial paper to a higher proportion of cash and treasury assets, introduced third-party audits (by one of the world's top five global independent public accounting firms, BDO), increased the frequency of asset reserve disclosure, in an attempt to rebuild market trust.

This illustrates that sufficient redemption capacity not only requires proving an adequate fund reserve but also verifying the quality of the asset composition. A series of events in the crypto industry confirm a consensus: reserve transparency, asset liquidity, and audit independence are indispensable. The EU's "Market in Crypto-Assets Regulation" (MiCA) also explicitly states that stablecoin issuers need to regularly disclose the composition and management of asset reserves, custody policies, etc.

OKX has set a transparency benchmark in this regard: as a platform that custodies mainstream stablecoins such as USDT and USDC, OKX not only monthly discloses the reserves of 22 assets and the reserve ratio (>100%), but also ensures that the reserve asset structure is clear and healthy—the four core assets, BTC, ETH, USDT, and USDC, account for 66%, and the top ten assets cover 88.8%, avoiding excessive concentration on illiquid tokens. The health of the reserve structure is crucial for a financial company's risk resilience. Furthermore, in terms of auditing, we also collaborate closely with the independent third-party audit firm Hacken to conduct monthly audits regularly, publicly disclose the audit process and on-chain data.

Scenario 3: Upgrade of PoR from "Asset Existence" to "Liability Constraint"

FTX's collapse pushed the exchange's trust crisis to its peak, profoundly revealing that asset existence does not equate to fund security. FTX's core issue was that the platform artificially inflated its solvency through off-balance-sheet liabilities or related-party transactions, where even though the reserve "exists," the "solvency" had already collapsed. Alameda Research used FTT tokens as collateral to obtain loans, creating an illusion of asset adequacy, while user deposits were misappropriated for high-risk speculation.

This type of event reflects that Proof of Reserves cannot stop at asset existence, but must upgrade to asset-liability matching. That is, it must not only prove that "user's money is there," but also prove that "the platform does not owe more money than it has."

OKX's PoR evolutionary path is precisely to provide a solution for such systemic risks. Its evolution from Merkle Tree to the zk-STARK upgrade version: version 1.0 ensures that the platform holds users' assets, while the zero-knowledge proof upgrade demonstrates that OKX can redeem user assets at any time (Assets ≥ Liabilities). Under the constraints of zero-knowledge proof, users can ensure that their assets are included in the data computation and validation process, with no accounts omitted and no user accounts having a negative balance. Such mathematical constraints ensure that the exchange does not engage in fund misappropriation, debt inflation, and other issues.

This evolution is a necessary step in the transparent evolution of the entire crypto financial system, providing a foundational trust structure with redemption guarantees for the crypto finance industry. Transitioning from periodic audits to mathematical constraints and on-chain consensus makes solvency a system attribute that can be self-proven.

Conclusion

Although the above three scenarios have different backgrounds, they reflect the emerging industry consensus: the security of user assets cannot rely on institutional self-commitment but must establish a "trustless" infrastructure—from the transparency of reserves, the health of the reserve structure, to further cryptographic self-proving capabilities. PoR builds a trust cornerstone in every corner of the crypto financial world.

We believe that the significance of PoR lies in establishing a transparent, publicly verifiable, and autonomously validated asset-liability structure. It is not just a technology but an institutionalized trust infrastructure.

Through technological innovation and institutional design, OKX has upgraded PoR from an "audit tool" to a "trust infrastructure." Such practices are revealing the industry's future direction: only by integrating on-chain data, technical proof, and systemic institutions can the entire industry truly achieve a leap in security.
