At least 11 mainstream centralized exchanges globally have released PoR (Proof of Reserves) reports, aiming to demonstrate their solvency by comparing platform reserves to user assets. This is a self-regulatory action taken by centralized exchanges in the absence of a unified regulatory framework.

PoR has to some extent improved the information asymmetry between exchanges and users, gradually becoming the default self-regulatory paradigm in the crypto industry. However, the implementation level varies among exchanges: most still rely on single-point validation, facing challenges such as privacy vs. transparency conflicts, doubts about liability authenticity, and difficulty in assessing asset quality. To address these pain points, OKX has built a more trustworthy verification system by introducing zero-knowledge proofs, open-source verification tools, expanding asset coverage, increasing report frequency, and other means. This article will delve into the core pain points of the current PoR mechanism and explore how OKX is promoting industry transparency through technological and process optimizations.

Pain Point 1: Limitations of Point-in-Time Verification

PoR is typically based on a snapshot of assets and liabilities at a specific point in time, making it difficult to reflect the real-time financial dynamics of an exchange. During market volatility or frequent fund movements, this static information fails to help users assess the exchange's immediate solvency, leading to trust crises. For example, the 2022 FTX collapse exposed this issue: users suffered significant losses due to the unavailability of real-time data. Moreover, some exchanges may temporarily borrow assets before an audit and immediately withdraw them after the audit to create a "sufficient asset" illusion. Although on-chain tracking is improving identification capabilities, this short-term behavior still significantly undermines the credibility of PoR. Most importantly, many exchanges lack a stable reporting mechanism and may even suspend report updates when asset conditions are tight, further exacerbating the trust gap.

In contrast, OKX adheres to a monthly PoR report release schedule, having already published over 30 reports, setting an industry benchmark in terms of frequency and consistency. By consistently disclosing the platform's asset status, OKX has avoided one-time or low-frequency disclosure formalism issues, allowing users to dynamically observe financial change trends rather than relying on one-time snapshots. This long-term, stable transparency mechanism significantly enhances the actual value of PoR and provides a more referential validation path for trust-building on exchanges.

Pain Point 2: Verification Vulnerabilities in Data Authenticity and Integrity

Although the PoR mechanism can prove that an exchange holds enough assets, i.e., platform assets ≥ user deposits (platform liabilities), it cannot guarantee the authenticity and integrity of the data itself. For instance, under normal circumstances, each user's deposit balance should be a positive number:

Reality:

User Deposits (Platform Liabilities): User A deposits 10,000, User B deposits 20,000

Platform Actual Assets: 20,000

PoR: 20,000 (Platform Assets) ÷ 30,000 (Platform Liabilities) ≈ 67% (Insufficient Reserve)

Fraudulent Operation:

To falsify a 100% reserve ratio, a dishonest exchange may create a "negative value account," claiming, for example, that "User C owes the exchange 10,000"

User Deposits (Platform Liabilities) are tampered with: 30,000 (Platform Liabilities) - 10,000 (Fictitious "Platform Liability") = 20,000 (Artificially Reduced Liability);

False PoR: 20,000 (Platform Assets) ÷ 20,000 (Tampered Platform Liabilities) = 100% (Seemingly Secure).

How does OKX use technical constraints to intercept negative value accounts and other forms of data falsification? OKX uses zk-STARK technology to prove and verify all OKX account assets held by the exchange. OKX takes a "snapshot" of all user accounts and applies "constraints" based on the "zk-STARK" algorithm. The first is the "Balance Sum Constraint," requiring the total assets to equal the sum of all account asset balances; the second is the "Non-Negative Constraint," ensuring no negative asset accounts are introduced to inflate the balance sheet; the third is the "Inclusivity Constraint," requiring no accounts to be left out, thereby ensuring the authenticity and integrity of the PoR data.

Notably, compared to other PoR technologies, the zk-STARK solution does not require any trusted setup to generate mathematically verifiable proofs that anyone can independently verify for correctness. The entire process is trustless and decentralized, avoiding opaque platform operations and configuration vulnerabilities, making it arguably the most secure PoR solution currently available.

Pain Point Three: User Verification Technical Barrier

While PoR theoretically allows users to self-verify, in practice, ordinary users often lack the necessary technical knowledge to independently verify an exchange's reserve proof, resulting in most users still needing to passively trust the exchange or conclusions from third-party audit firms. This technical barrier severely limits the practical utility of PoR.

OKX's zk-STARK PoR solution supports user-initiated verification, truly embodying the core concept of "Don't Trust, Verify." For example, users can verify the inclusivity constraint through the following steps

Log in to your OKX account to view the PoR Report details

Obtain JSON data containing your account balance and Merkle path

Use open-source tools to independently verify whether your account assets are included in the Merkle root

Users can also verify balance constraints, non-negativity constraints, ownership of wallet addresses, and wallet assets using OKX's self-verification tutorial and tools. Furthermore, OKX's PoR utilizes recursive proof composition to compress all verification data into a small file of less than 1MB. This means users do not need to download proof files of hundreds of MBs or even GBs, significantly enhancing self-verification efficiency and transparency.

Pain Point 4: Lack of PoR Audit Standards

Currently, there are no unified PoR standards and methods in the industry. Users face various validation processes and report formats across different exchanges, making it difficult to compare the security of platforms horizontally and evaluate the professionalism and credibility of audit results. This lack of standardization increases users' cognitive burden and provides room for malicious exchanges to manipulate data, further weakening the industry's transparency and user trust.

To address this pain point, OKX has introduced a dual-layer protection of internal self-attestation and external verification. On one hand, the innovative zk-STARK zero-knowledge proof technology eliminates potential vulnerabilities in traditional proof-of-reserves, achieving efficient verification without the need for third-party trust and elevating reserve transparency to new heights. On the other hand, OKX has deep cooperation with the independent third-party audit firm Hacken to conduct monthly audits, publicly sharing the audit process and on-chain data for users to access and independently verify at any time. Building on this foundation, OKX has also fully open-sourced the PoR system, accompanied by detailed documentation and verification tools, providing a replicable standardization technical template for the industry. This not only facilitates immediate verification and oversight by developers and the security community but also promotes industry consensus and the standardization process of PoR.

Pain Point 5: Insufficient Asset Quality Assessment

Many exchanges often only scratch the surface when publishing PoR reports, focusing on the level of "how much money and what type of currencies," lacking in-depth analysis of asset quality. This is primarily manifested in: a limited coverage of currencies, usually only listing mainstream or platform coins, overlooking obscure coins and high-risk assets with significant proportions in the holdings; an excessively high proportion of platform coins, where introducing in-house tokens can easily inflate the overall valuation, posing a high risk of motivated high valuation; superficial market cap display, even if obscure tokens are disclosed, they are presented only with the quantity on the books or market value snapshot, without a comprehensive evaluation based on market depth, liquidity, or price volatility. These shortcomings make it difficult for users to accurately assess the true solvency of an exchange. Once the market experiences a rapid downturn or a sudden liquidity crisis, the gap between book assets and actual liquidity will expose security vulnerabilities, creating a false sense of security for users and exposing them to uncontrollable potential risks.

OKX Demonstrates Asset Quality from Multiple Perspectives, Rather than Just Quantity:

The "Cleanliness" of non-platform coins is about 70%, while the PoR for each mainstream coin is maintained at a reserve rate of 100% or higher, proving that even without relying on platform coins, it is possible to fully cover user liabilities.

In the latest PoR, the total value of the four major mainstream coins BTC, ETH, USDT, and USDC accounts for approximately 66%. The total value of the Top 10 mainstream coins accounts for about 88.8%, and the total value of the 22 publicly disclosed coins accounts for about 90%, demonstrating a healthier asset structure and risk diversification.

Recently, there has been a steady increase in the reserves of mainstream coins, such as a 13.7% increase in ETH and a 5.6% increase in BTC, indicating that user and institutional confidence in the platform's security and liquidity management continues to strengthen.

Simultaneously, OKX continues to expand the range of coins covered by its PoR, from the initial 3 coins to the current 22 coins, basically covering the majority of user holdings. This has achieved a dual enhancement of the PoR report in terms of asset coverage and depth, providing users with a more comprehensive and transparent reference for solvency.

Setting a New Standard for PoR Transparency

OKX's comprehensive upgrade of PoR not only represents a technological leap but also highlights the company's social responsibility. For users, transparency is no longer an option but an indispensable commitment of the trading platform; asset verification is no longer a privilege but a basic right of every user. This upgrade has transformed users from passive trust to active verification. For the industry, this move will bring the crypto world back to the initial intention of decentralization, signaling the beginning of a mature stage for crypto finance and setting a new benchmark for transparency and security for the entire industry.

For OKX itself, the PoR system design makes any "malicious behavior" mathematically impossible, eliminating the need for the trading platform to build trust through reputation. With transparency deeply rooted in the protocol layer, regulatory agencies can also rest assured. When preventive mechanisms become the industry norm, the risk of black swan events is significantly reduced. Looking back at the development of crypto assets, every trust crisis has spurred new solutions, and this time, OKX's PoR is not only a technological breakthrough but also a liberation of ideology—proving to the world that in the Web3 world, trust can be encoded, transparency can be verified, and security can be witnessed.
