Coinbase Ventures, established in 2018, is the venture capital fund of the cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, dedicated to advancing the crypto and Web3 industry, making broad investments in early-stage projects across all categories of cryptocurrency and blockchain technology to enhance global economic freedom.
Coinbase Ventures emerged after former LinkedIn Vice President Emilie Choi joined Coinbase as Chief Operating Officer, where she helped the business development team realize the need to build during bear markets, invest in early-stage crypto companies, and foster strong relationships to drive ecosystem growth. Over the past five years, the Coinbase Ventures portfolio has expanded to nearly 400 projects spanning across 40+ countries globally.
By its own categorization, Coinbase Ventures divides its portfolio into five categories: Protocols & Web3 Infrastructure (27%), DeFi (22%), CeFi (19%), Platform & Developer Tools (16%), and NFT / Metaverse / Gaming (16%), essentially encompassing various aspects of the crypto ecosystem. Notably, the bull market effect in the crypto market in 2021 accelerated the rapid expansion of Coinbase Ventures' investment landscape, with nearly 150 investments made in the past year, averaging a new investment every 2.5 days. In 2022 so far, Coinbase Ventures has again completed around 150 investments, with over 70 investments in just the first quarter.
Despite its broad coverage, insights into Coinbase Ventures' macro view of the entire crypto ecosystem can still be gleaned from its portfolio. Firstly, investments in Web3 infrastructure and protocols make up the largest share, reflecting Coinbase Ventures' fundamental understanding and approach to the crypto ecosystem. Secondly, Coinbase Ventures is most focused on markets and growth, with significant investments in DeFi and NFT markets, lending, liquidity, and asset management. Developer tools lean towards projects that can simplify developer experiences to lower the barrier for Web2 developers to enter Web3. Additionally, Coinbase Ventures places significant emphasis on CeFi projects that can bring about explosive growth.
