Parallel chaining is the last core feature proposed in Polkadot's white paper, which will allow Polkadot to implement its extensible multi-chain architecture. After a period of testing, optimization, and auditing, parallel chains will be ready for release on Polkadot and can be enabled through on-chain governance. Once the parallel chain is online, the community will decide what additional features and upgrades to the network should be added over time.

Current phase: Test network debuts

Parallel chain functionality will first be tested and bug fixed on parallel chain test networks such as Rococo. Once we are confident that the code is ready, we open up registration and parallel chain teams can test their own chains, including interacting with other chains via XCMP-Lite. Once we have developed and tested the final elements for the core functionality of parallel chains and Cumulus -- approval voting, distribution, availability recovery, and controversy -- the Polkadot code base will officially complete its functionality.

What's next?

When we are confident that the test network parallel links are running smoothly and that the code has been fully audited and benchmarked, we will submit a document regarding enabling parallel links and through on-chain governanceKusamaVote on the Slot auction.

Parallel chain Slot auction

Parallel chain Slot leases will be allocated through unauthorized candle auctions. After the first Kusama auction, there is a new one about every two weeks. After each auction, the winning parallel chains will be deployed into the network at the beginning of the lease period. The auction will continue from here on a rolling basis, as more slots become available as the previous leases expire.

What's next?

Once all audits are complete and parallel chains are running smoothly on Kusama, Polkadot's community can enable parallel chain functionality, deploy the first public parallel chain, and begin Slot auctions on Polkadot through on-chain governance.

PolkadotDebuts and Slot auctions

Polkadot governance will first enable parallel chain functionality through run-time environment upgrade voting. After that, it can take a vote to start Slot auctions and add any parallel chains of public benefit.

Future upgrades

With Parallel Link running on Polkadot, the release of the network will be officially completed as it was originally envisioned and designed. Future upgrades, including full-featured XCMP and parallel threading, can be enabled through network governance after the code is fully developed, tested, benchmarked, and audited. From here, Polkadot's future will depend on the community.

Q&A

Q1: How many parallel chain slots are available altogether?

Based on the constraints of theoretical calculations, the current goal and expectation is that we will have approximately 100 parallel chain slots available on Polkadot, although potential future optimizations (such as nested relay chains) may allow us to increase this number further. However, it will be some time before the Polkadot mainnet fully supports 100 parallel chain slots, and they may slowly be added to the system over time. Not all of these slots will be allocated through parallel chain Slot auctions (after the auction starts based on a successful governance vote), because some of them will be used for common parallel chains (aka system chains) and parallel threads to support governance.

Q2:  How will parallel chain Slot auctions take place?

Parallel chain Slot leases will be based on two weeksThe candle auctionGuarantee. At first, an auction would be held about every two weeks. After that, the auction will continue on a rolling basis, as more slots become available as the previous leases expire. Details on the Slot auction will be disclosed soon.

Q3:  What happens at the end of a parallel Slot lease?

Individual parallel chain slots can be rented for a maximum of two years (every six months). At the end of the lease, slots are returned for auction, and teams need to bid again if they want to keep them. Parallel chain slots are fungible, so in order to avoid connection breaks and minimize the risk of losing subsequent auctions, teams can bid and secure adjacent slots before the current lease period ends. Teams can also choose toParallel threadsWay to connect to Polkadot.

Q4:  What is parallel chain Slot crowdlending and how can I participate?

Parallel chain teams may or may not choose to use PolkadotThe mechanism of creditTo help support their parallel chain Slot rental bids. In order to participate in crowdlending, users agree to lock part of the parallel chain Slot for the duration of the Slot lease, which will then be unlocked. Details of individual crowdlending activities and the process of joining will be determined and communicated by the respective parallel chain teams.

Important note: Polkadot's local crowdsourcing mechanism does not require users to borrow from their ownThe wallet/ Account sends DOT or KSM to participate in crowdlending. All crowdlending contributions are handled through the logic of the crowdlending module, where an activity is identified by an index rather than by an address. LegiTIMATE groups crowdlending locally on Polkadot (via Polkadot.js) do not require you to send a token to an address to participate. However, some teams may choose to use other mechanisms or platforms for crowdlending activities. In this case,Make sure you never send a token to anyone you don't trust. Always check the team's official channels to learn how to participate.

Q5:  What is the cost of running parallel chains on Polkadot?

The cost of renting parallel chain slots will be purely a function of market supply and demand, so it is difficult to give any meaningful estimate of tender requirements. However, it is important to realize that the actual cost of parallel chain slots is not equal to the size of the parallel chain bid. Since parallel chain bindings are returned at the end of the Slot lease, the actual cost of running parallel chains is best described as the opportunity cost of not betting on these DOTs during the lease period. The need to run the collator is an additional but relatively small cost. In general, for high throughput applications, we expect parallel chain ratios to be builtIntelligent contractOr it would be more economical to build a separate blockchain.

Q6:  How and when to enable parallel threads?

We expect parallel threading to be enabled a few months after parallel chains are online. As with any network upgrade, it needs to be enabled through on-chain governance.

Q7:  When you enableAcross the chainMessaging?

Some interoperability features already exist in the Rococo Parallel Chain Test Network using XCMP-Lite, which allows parallel chains to exchange messages (such as assets and arbitrary logic) over relay chains. The full XCMP will allow direct message delivery from parallel chains to parallel chains without the need for a relay link from message to message, and this is still under development. The full XCMP will need to be tested, benchmarked, and audited before a large number of parallel chains can be enabled on Polkadot.

Q8:  What are parallel chains of common good, and why do we need them?

Chains of public interest are parallel chains that are considered to be of public interest because they will benefit the entire network. The chain of public interest is determined by network governance, which can vote on the relay chain to allocate an empty Slot for the chain, thereby bypassing the auction process. Chains of public interest can be thought of as system-level chains and chains of public interest that provide functionality and benefits to networks that architects can leverage.

Q9:  What is the duration of a Slot lease, do parallel chains have to bid for the entire duration?

Parallel chain teams can bid within a six-month period, from a minimum of six months to a maximum of 24 months. At the end of the Slot lease period, the Slot will be auctioned again if the team wishes to keep the Slot (or as a Slot)Parallel threadsLink), they will need to bid again. Parallel chain slots are fungible, so in order to avoid connection breaks and minimize the risk of losing subsequent auctions, teams can bid and secure adjacent slots before the current lease period ends.

Q10:  In addition to candle auctions, there are other ways to ensure parallel chain slotssecurity?

Parallel chains that are considered to be of common interest to the entire network can be added to a Slot through governance voting (see above).

Q11:  Where can I ask other questions?
