Crusoe sells troubled Wyoming data center project to Google, which plans to invest $17 billion to take over development.

BlockBeats news, November 7 - AI data center developer Crusoe confirmed yesterday that it has sold an unfinished data center project in southeastern Wyoming, USA, to Google. Google plans to invest $17 billion to take over and continue development, but the parties did not disclose the specific acquisition price.

The project was initially announced in 2025 by Crusoe and Blackstone-backed infrastructure company Tallgrass, with plans to eventually expand power capacity to 10 gigawatts. Previously, Google had considered becoming a customer of the project, but ultimately decided to take over due to concerns about construction costs and timelines under Crusoe's management.

This transaction highlights the challenges faced by independent data center developers in large-scale AI infrastructure construction, including equipment procurement, power supply, cost control, and community opposition.

Crusoe has not lost its partnership with Google as a result, and is currently still developing another data center for Google near Amarillo, Texas. The company has previously built data centers for Oracle, OpenAI, Microsoft, and Meta, and completed $3.9 billion in financing in September this year at a valuation of approximately $30.9 billion.
