BlockBeats news, November 5 — Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said in an interview, "Over the past period, a noteworthy trend has emerged in the security situation across the industry. The good news is that security vulnerabilities and attack incidents at the smart contract level are decreasing. Most of the major hacks that occurred over the past year and a half have been more concentrated at the user interface layer and centralized components. On the one hand, hacker attacks are still ongoing; but on the other hand, the underlying core parts that truly require focused security protection are actually seeing their security continuously improve. That is to say, the scope of infrastructure across the industry capable of providing a higher level of security assurance is expanding. I believe more and more people have realized that the top priority for the next two years is not to achieve victory, but to ensure their own survival. The entire industry is thinking about how to achieve this goal. I expect that relevant institutions and large trading platforms will also take action as soon as possible, including large trading platforms, custodians, and other financial institutions.
I think one correct decision Binance made previously was launching BNB Chain. This way, when users deploy their operations on-chain and execute relevant actions through smart contracts, they can also benefit from the higher security assurance provided by on-chain infrastructure. Therefore, I expect more institutions will move in this direction in the future.
I think the only real solution is for the entire industry to genuinely raise its security level. There is a challenge here: the range of operations that can be performed securely is indeed continuously expanding, but at the same time, if someone does not value security themselves, then no matter how much efficiency improvement AI, larger teams, stronger technical capabilities, or other factors bring, they will ultimately consume these gains on conducting more and more aggressive business rather than using them to further improve security. This is a very real problem. I expect that if security issues develop to a certain extent, regulators in various countries and industry leaders will begin to require enterprises to assume more responsibility and adopt more prudent operating strategies. I believe industry regulation and accountability mechanisms will gradually develop in a direction that requires enterprises to place greater emphasis on security, and all parties are currently adapting to this change.
The Ethereum Foundation has been providing support as much as possible, including writing relevant code and tools so that users can adopt more secure technical solutions according to their own needs. For example, we are providing quantum-safe signature-related code and supporting the construction of wallets protected by quantum-safe technology. However, the final step still depends on users themselves: they must proactively recognize the risks and choose to enable these security measures. Another important issue is that everyone needs to place greater emphasis on security. I believe that in the future, the entire industry's awareness of and attention to security will further increase."
