Beating AI News Flash: According to a report by LatePost, Yang Tianzhen, founder of Easy Entertainment, and Jiang Shanshan, former head of frontier technology investment at Alibaba, have co-founded a venture capital firm called Helios Venture, focusing on frontier technologies such as AI, embodied intelligence, nuclear fusion, and brain-computer interfaces.
The division of labor between the two is clear: Jiang Shanshan is responsible for investment, while Yang Tianzhen handles investor relations, content, and brand building.
Jiang Shanshan previously served as Managing Director of Alibaba's Strategic Investment Department. Over the past three years, she led investments in more than ten frontier technology projects at Alibaba, with cumulative amounts exceeding RMB 10 billion, including Moonshot AI (Kimi), robotics company Sharpa, and nuclear fusion company Nova Fusion. In August of this year, she left Alibaba and began preparing her own fund.
The collaboration between the two originated from a consultation. Jiang Shanshan approached Yang Tianzhen to learn how to build influence for a new fund. Yang Tianzhen proactively proposed starting a business together.
Jiang Shanshan believes that after leaving a large platform like Alibaba, a new fund must build its own brand to compete with top-tier institutions for quality startup projects. Yang Tianzhen will leverage her experience in talent management and content marketing to help the fund connect with entrepreneurs, and also provide portfolio companies with support in brand communication and founder image management. The two also plan to co-produce a technology podcast aimed at general audiences.
This approach has precedents. Silicon Valley VC firm a16z has a dedicated new media team that helps portfolio companies attract customers, talent, and investors through videos, podcasts, and proprietary distribution channels.
Jiang Shanshan summarized the logic of their collaboration as: investment capability is the 1, and content is the 0s behind it, responsible for amplifying the value of the former.
In terms of investment strategy, Jiang Shanshan favors "selective and concentrated bets." She revealed that she had previously reviewed over a hundred AI application companies without making a single investment. She believes that consumer-facing AI productivity tools and entertainment applications may in the future be primarily dominated by big tech companies or model companies; complex areas such as enterprise-level AI Agent infrastructure may offer more independent startup opportunities.
