Beating AI News Flash: Anthropic warned in its IPO prospectus updated on November 2 that AI may soon cross a critical threshold related to "recursive self-improvement" (RSI), significantly accelerating the pace of AI research and development. There have been past instances where significant acceleration in R&D progress was not detected in time and was only recognized after the acceleration had already occurred.
Currently, Claude is already involved in writing code, running experiments, and processing training data to help develop stronger next-generation models. The new models can in turn accelerate subsequent R&D, forming a continuously accelerating cycle.
According to Anthropic's safety policy, there are two scenarios for crossing this critical threshold:
1. AI can complete the work of an entire AI research team at similar cost;
2. Or enable AI technology progress to at least double in speed, compressing progress that would originally take two years into one year.
As AI becomes increasingly deeply involved in its own R&D, model capabilities may grow faster than safety evaluations, alignment research, and safeguard measures can be updated. Anthropic has not yet determined that any existing model has reached this level; this warning is mainly based on internal estimates and predictions about future models. The company is currently considering revising its safety policy to ensure that critical R&D processes remain under human supervision and control.
