Beating AI News Flash: Alphabet's recent earnings report shows that Google search query volume grew at its fastest year-over-year rate in five years, but AI Mode monetization remains low, dragging down search business revenue performance. Google's third-quarter search revenue grew 12% year-over-year but fell short of market expectations; revenue for Google Services, which includes search and other businesses, was $96.3 billion, also missing analysts' estimate of $98.5 billion.
Google Chief Business Officer Philipp Schindler said AI Mode query volume is growing strongly, but monetization is currently low. Queries in AI Mode are on average about three times longer than traditional search, and about one-fifth of queries are completed via voice, images, or documents. CEO Pichai said the company will prioritize improving the search experience before gradually advancing commercialization.
To find new revenue growth points, Google is exploring introducing product comparisons, deals, and sponsored links into the AI shopping process, letting AI agents gather information and filter products while preserving the step where users compare brands, prices, and services. Google has previously tested showing deals in travel planning and adding clearly labeled sponsored links to AI-generated product lists, and plans to extend ads in AI Mode and AI Overviews to more queries.
Pichai also said Google will further bring agent capabilities into Search and Gemini and expand them to products such as Chrome, Android, and Workspace.
