a16z Frontier officially confirms its continued commitment to the crypto space, expanding its investment scope to frontier tech startups.

BlockBeats news, October 23 - a16z General Partner Chris Dixon officially announced in a post that a16z crypto is being renamed a16z Frontier, with its investment scope expanded from crypto startups to broader frontier tech startups—companies building new technologies, opening new markets, and potentially requiring years to mature. Dixon emphasized that this is a scope expansion rather than a pivot; the team will continue investing in crypto and related businesses and will push for sensible crypto regulation.

Dixon said that as blockchain sees broader adoption, Wall Street and fintech companies have routinely rolled out on-chain products, the "crypto company" label has become less important, and companies should be defined by their business itself rather than the technology they use. His remarks also point to the current AI wave: beyond using AI to do existing work faster and better, he is more focused on the native new use cases it spawns, full-stack startups integrating software, hardware, and services, and new types of networks connecting people and agents. Dixon believes blockchain will still play an important role in this, providing the internet with fast, cheap, global, and programmable rails for money; stablecoins are becoming a standard tool for fintech and institutions and can also support machine-to-machine transactions and the cold start of new networks.

Dixon will lead the fund together with company founders Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz, as well as General Partners Eddy Lazzarin and Guy Wuollet. The operations team will continue to serve existing and future portfolio companies in areas such as regulation, go-to-market, talent, marketing, and technology R&D.
