Beating AI News Flash: Anthropic recently announced the establishment of the "Anthropic Public Interest Fund" and pledged an initial injection of 5% of the company's shares. The fund adopts a "growth-linked escalation" mechanism: each time the company's valuation rises 50% above the baseline, the board of directors may, at its discretion, add another 2% of shares. The fund is registered as a wholly-owned limited liability company (LLC) rather than a traditional nonprofit organization, in order to maintain flexibility in the form of donations. Anthropic explicitly pledged that the equity held by the fund will never be used for political lobbying or political donations in the United States or overseas.
The goal of this move is to explore new public interest pathways on a larger scale, including addressing the labor market shock that AI may cause (Anthropic has previously invested $200 million for this purpose). Combined with the co-founders' pledge to donate 80% of their personal shares, the employee matching gift program, and this injection, it is expected that approximately 20% of Anthropic's total shares will be dedicated to the public interest, and this proportion will increase if specific valuation milestones are reached in the future. Anthropic stated that this essentially redirects the executive escalating compensation mechanism commonly used by tech companies toward the public interest.
