BlockBeats news, September 15: Solana has completed a mainnet upgrade, increasing the maximum size of a single transaction from the previous 1,232 bytes to 4,096 bytes, an increase of more than 3 times, providing developers with more space to execute more complex operations in a single transaction.
According to the Solana Foundation, the upgrade officially took effect on September 15 at approximately 1 AM UTC, at the start of mainnet Epoch 1035. This upgrade also introduces the v1 transaction format and maintains full backward compatibility with legacy transactions, so existing transaction formats can continue to be used; protocols that wish to take advantage of the larger transaction space need to upgrade to the v1 format.
The Solana Foundation said the upgrade is mainly intended to help developers consolidate work that previously could not fit into a single transaction into on-chain transactions, including zero-knowledge proofs, multisignature transactions, and new on-chain signature schemes.
Recently, Solana has continued to advance network performance upgrades. In August, Solana shortened the block Slot time from 400 milliseconds to 350 milliseconds; it had previously also announced plans to further reduce it to 200 milliseconds. In addition, Solana validators approved on August 28 a doubling of the rate at which the network's annual inflation rate declines, in order to reduce future SOL issuance.
