OpenAI has seen at least 14 senior executives depart this year, undergoing a major leadership shakeup ahead of its IPO.

Dynamic Beat AI News Flash: At least 14 senior executives and key personnel have left their positions at OpenAI this year. Business Insider counted 13 individuals as of August 21, and The Wall Street Journal later revealed the departure of Data Center Lead Chris Malone.

This group of people span various areas including business, product, security, ethics, research, and infrastructure. Specifically, they include:

1. Denise Dresser: Chief Revenue Officer, announced resignation in August.

2. Brad Lightcap: Former COO and Special Projects Lead, left to start his own venture.

3. Fidji Simo: App Business CEO, stepped down from full-time work due to health reasons and transitioned to a part-time advisor role.

4. Kevin Weil: Former CPO and Head of OpenAI for Science, left to start his own venture.

5. Bill Peebles: Head of Sora, departed in April.

6. Srinivas Narayanan: Enterprise Applications CTO, left in April.

7. Kate Rouch: Chief Marketing Officer, stepped down to focus on breast cancer treatment.

8. Barret Zoph: Enterprise AI Sales Lead, departed again approximately 5 months after returning to OpenAI.

9. Chloé Bakalar: Head of Ethics, left less than a year after joining.

10. Johannes Heidecke: Security Systems Lead, left during a security team reorganization.

11. Joshua Achiam: Chief Futurist and former Mission Alignment Lead, departed after nearly 9 years at OpenAI.

12. Caitlin Kalinowski: Head of Robotics and Consumer Hardware, resigned citing dissatisfaction with the governance of Pentagon collaborations.

13. Kaylin Voss: Vice President of Sales for the Americas, resigned a week after Dresser's departure.

14. Chris Malone: Data Center Lead, departed following an infrastructure team restructure.

These departures were not all motivated by the same reasons. Some left to start their own ventures, some due to health reasons, and others amidst team restructuring and management shake-ups. This round of adjustments is also seen by some insiders as a proactive management refresh.

OpenAI, which secretly submitted its IPO filing to the U.S. in June, is now experiencing consecutive changes in leadership in the business, security, research, and infrastructure domains. Evidently, the organization's pre-IPO organizational stability does not match that of its competitor, Anthropic.
