Meta Introduces Open Source Virtual Assistant Model Muse Glimmer

BlockBeats News, August 10th, Meta Platforms (META.O) announced the launch of Muse Glimmer, a 30B parameter open-source AI model that can run on Mac or PC. It is distilled from Muse Spark. More importantly, Zuckerberg confirmed that the weights of Muse Spark 1.2 will also be open-sourced in the coming weeks.

Meta has actually teased this for a long time. When Muse Spark was first released in April, the model could only be used through Meta AI, and the weights were not open-sourced. However, Meta confirmed at that time that they would release an open version. After waiting for 4 months, the Muse series finally delivers Glimmer.

Glimmer is more like an appetizer, while Spark 1.2 is the main event. It is Meta's latest generation base model and is also the underlying model for the newly released Muse Code. If the weights are released as planned, Meta will truly bring back the open weight path of the Llama era with Muse.

This release comes as the company seeks to solidify its position after assembling an expensive superintelligence team last year to return to the high-stakes AI race. Zuckerberg stated in the announcement that if American companies are to lead in the open-source weight model field, the U.S. needs to rethink its policies. When discussing open-source models, Zuckerberg said: "Foreign labs currently have several advantages in this area, as U.S. labs must comply with additional restrictions on training data. If we want U.S. open-source models to lead in the long run, U.S. policy must reduce these additional barriers." He also stated, "We will soon resume releasing some open-source models."
