Analysis: After multiple threats and concessions by Trump, the Iranian leadership believes he does not want to escalate the war

In April this year, Trump warned Tehran to agree to a ceasefire or else "an entire civilization would perish," but then extended the deadline.

In May and June, he took similar actions again. Iranian sources inside the country have said that this approach has further reinforced a view within the country's leadership that Trump is not seeking an escalation of conflict but is using it as leverage in negotiations.

They believe that Iran can withstand the pressure and can increase the cost to the United States through proxy forces (such as the Houthi rebels in Yemen) and by threatening global shipping until Washington comes to the conclusion that there is no military solution to this conflict. Tehran's current assessment is that time is on their side.
