Coinbase Launches Comprehensive Post-Quantum Cryptography Upgrade: In-House Quantum Key System to Go Live Within a Year, Teams Up with Stanford for Bitcoin Developer Conference

BlockBeats News, July 23, Coinbase's Chief Information Security Officer Jeff Lunglhofer published an article titled "What Has Coinbase Done to Prepare for Post-Quantum Cryptography," outlining the three work streams to address the threat of quantum computing.


First, Coinbase has initiated the development of the post-quantum version of its in-house key management system CoreKMS, named PQ-CoreKMS. Within a year, they plan to deliver an automated signing pipeline that combines secure enclaves, secret sharing, and threshold cryptography to support any post-quantum signature algorithm. This will enable quantum-safe custody once blockchain adopts post-quantum solutions. Over the next two to three years, they will further develop full MPC capabilities for lattice-based cryptography and other schemes. Meanwhile, Coinbase is conducting a comprehensive review of its entire cryptographic infrastructure, prioritizing based on system criticality, attack surface, and migration complexity, and defining quantum computing milestone events to trigger actual migration. Base Chain is also included in the plan, inheriting Ethereum L1's post-quantum roadmap protection and developing specific plans for Base's unique aspects.


Second, Coinbase will co-host the first Bitcoin Developer Summit with Stanford University in August, bringing together core developers, cryptographers, and researchers to discuss post-quantum migration solutions. The goal is to provide an honest assessment of the current situation, viable solutions, and advancement paths, with plans to institutionalize this discussion.


Lastly, as a founding member of the Bitcoin Security Alliance, Coinbase will donate to a fund supporting Bitcoin developers' quantum-safe work and directly contribute engineering resources to support proposals such as BIP-360 and the overall path to Bitcoin's post-quantum migration. Lunglhofer emphasized, "No single company can solve this problem alone, the only path forward is for researchers, developers, protocol designers, and businesses to move in the same direction—the quantum future is approaching, and the time to prepare is now."


Bitcoin Security Alliance Formed Today, has received commitments totaling $15 million over three years from nine institutions including BlackRock, Fidelity, Block, Blockstream, and Strategy.
