According to Dynamic Beating Monitor, Google DeepMind has once again lost key AI talent, with Gemini core contributor Jonas Adler and Alexander Pritzel planning to join Anthropic.
Over the past few days, Google has seen a continuous exodus, including AlphaFold team leader and 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry laureate John Jumper (who moved to Anthropic), as well as Gemini co-lead Noam Shazeer (who departed to join OpenAI as the Head of Architecture Research).
In addition, senior research engineer Arthur Conmy, who was dedicated to Gemini 2.5 and AI encoding, has announced his move from London to San Francisco to join Anthropic, where he will be in charge of alignment work during the model training process; Canadian researcher Rishub Jain, who worked at DeepMind for 7 years, has also recently resigned with plans to establish a nonprofit organization focused on scalable and human-supervised AI safety.
The reshuffling of computing resources directly led to Shazeer's departure. Prior to his exit, Google reallocated the computational resources originally belonging to Shazeer's team to the DeepMind London pretraining team in order to optimize cross-team collaboration, hindering Shazeer's progress in Variant Transformer architecture research due to inadequate computing power.
The successive departure of multiple scientists directly confirms DeepMind's current retention crisis, forcing CEO Demis Hassabis to publicly acknowledge at the Cannes Lions Festival that the competition for AI talent is currently at its most intense level in the history of the tech industry. According to industry analysis released by SignalFire, the probability of DeepMind engineers switching to Anthropic is 11 times higher than the reverse migration; and with a recent valuation of $965 billion after completing a Series H funding round, Anthropic is leveraging high salaries, stock options, and autonomous research space to siphon talent from Google.
Due to the longer-term non-compete agreements under UK law, London-based researchers like Jumper may not be able to officially start work at Anthropic until the end of 2026 or 2027. With Jumper's departure, core members of the AlphaFold team have left one after another in recent months. Some members have turned to Isomorphic Labs, a drug discovery company incubated by Google, while others have chosen to follow Jumper to Anthropic. Anthropic is actively expanding into the life sciences and healthcare fields, with a valuation as high as $965 billion and plans for a fall IPO, offering significant financial incentives to employees.
