Lebanese Official: Ceasefire Agreement in Lebanon to be Declared "Soon," Duration May Be Linked to US-Iran Truce

BlockBeats News, April 16th, according to the Financial Times, Lebanese officials revealed that under U.S. pressure to ease tensions in the Middle East, a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon aimed at ending more than six weeks of hostilities is expected to be announced "soon."

Sources familiar with the matter said that the ceasefire between Israel and the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah could take effect "within this week," most likely after the Israeli ground forces complete the occupation of the key southern Lebanese town of Bent Jbeil. The conflict in Lebanon has become a focal point in broader efforts to end the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran that erupted on February 28.

Lebanese officials pointed out that once the ceasefire is announced, its duration is likely to be linked to the duration of the U.S.-Iran ceasefire agreement. A Lebanese official stated that the ceasefire will cover an end to Israeli attacks but will not include an Israeli withdrawal. Other officials indicated that the ceasefire efforts are being led by the United States.
