Bithumb: Compensates Low-price Sold BTC Users with Price Difference and Consolation Money, Compensates All Visiting Users with 20,000 KRW

2026-02-08 05:37

BlockBeats News, February 8th. South Korean exchange Bithumb released a post-incident report on the "Accidental Bitcoin Airdrop," compensating each user who accessed the Bithumb App or website during the incident with 20,000 Korean won. Users who sold Bitcoin at a low price during the incident were compensated for the actual selling price difference by 100% plus an additional 10% consolation. Starting from February 9, 2026, 00:00, a 7-day period of fee-less trading for all assets on the platform has been initiated.

Bithumb stated that 99.7% of the mistakenly airdropped Bitcoin had been swiftly recovered on the same day, with the remaining 0.3% of Bitcoin (approximately 1,788 coins) sold, reimbursed in full with the platform's own assets. As of February 7, 2026, 22:42:52, Bithumb's Bitcoin asset consistency has been fully restored to 100%, ensuring the security of all customer assets. The South Korean Financial Supervisory Service conducted an on-site inspection on February 7th at 13:00.

In a previous announcement, Bithumb employees mistakenly distributed 2000 BTC instead of the intended 2000 Korean won as a reward, leading to hundreds of users unexpectedly receiving this airdrop. As a result of this incident, the price of Bitcoin on the Bithumb platform experienced a 10% temporary decline compared to other markets.
