The Last Day of the Cook Era | Rewire News Morning Brief

Apple to Change Leadership Tomorrow, Ternus Prioritizes AI. US Military Launches First Airstrike on Iran in a Month, Big Tech Gains $160 Billion in Paper Wealth.

Apple to Change Leadership Tomorrow, Ternus to Take Over as CEO with AI as Job No. 1

Tomorrow marks Cook's last day as Apple's CEO. Starting September 1, Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering John Ternus will officially take over, while Cook transitions to the role of Executive Chairman. Bloomberg reports that Ternus has identified AI as his top priority upon assuming the position.

At 50 years old, Ternus joined Apple in 2001 and has worked under both Jobs and Cook for over a decade. He has led the hardware architecture of the M-series chips and the rollout of the Vision Pro. The Information reports that Apple "serendipitously" gained an AI hardware advantage in its Mac product line, with Mac's unified memory architecture unexpectedly leading in on-device inference performance. This particular line falls directly under Ternus's purview.

Apple's AI strategy has long been criticized as being "two years late." However, Ternus's background suggests that Apple may not intend to directly compete with OpenAI and Google in cloud-based AI services, but rather focus on on-device inference. Passing the baton to a hardware engineer like Ternus instead of a software or services executive itself sends a strategic signal.

US Military Launches First Airstrike on Iran in a Month, Straits of Hormuz Standoff Resumes

The US military conducted an airstrike Sunday on two rocket launchers on Iran's Larak Island, as the Revolutionary Guard was preparing to launch rocket-propelled grenades carrying mines into the Strait of Hormuz. This marks the first US military strike against Iran in a month, breaking the silence since Trump paused military actions at the end of July.

Last week, the US military had just completed a mine clearance operation in the strait's main shipping lane. Iran swiftly claimed to have been attacked and vowed retaliation, with the Revolutionary Guard stating that "several soldiers were killed or injured." Within the same week, Treasury Secretary Bennett's "D-Day" sanction threat was largely ignored, China bought 90% of Iran's oil and issued a strong response stating "sanctions won't solve the problem," and Iranian banks continued operations in Dubai and Abu Dhabi as usual.

The simultaneous failure of both military and economic measures is now solidifying. As the war enters its sixth month, the most pessimistic predictions have not materialized; however, Fortune quotes an investment strategist as saying, "The global economy has accomplished an impossible task," a statement in itself indicating the current balance is fragile.

Big Tech Adds $160 Billion to Profit Statement, But It's All Paper Wealth

FT reported that Alphabet, Amazon, Nvidia, and Microsoft collectively recognized over $160 billion in "other income" in the 2026 Q2, stemming from the appreciation of their stakes in other AI companies. This number more than doubled from the previous quarter's $69 billion.

The biggest single driver was SpaceX. SpaceX went public in June with a valuation of $1.77 trillion, and Nvidia alone holds about 1.23 billion shares, instantly unlocking a massive unrealized gain on its balance sheet. Concurrently, Anthropic's valuation reportedly rose to around $965 billion, also contributing significant unrealized gains to its shareholders.

Under current U.S. accounting standards, companies' equity investments must be marked to market on the income statement. This means that when the valuation of the investee companies rises, the investing companies' income statements automatically inflate, even if not a penny is realized. How much of the $160 billion "profit" can turn into cash depends on whether these AI companies' valuations can hold. This is not fraud; it's a distortion permitted by the rules.

Cronos Chain Halts Due to Tectonic Vulnerability, $75 Million Drained

The Cronos blockchain associated with Crypto.com urgently stopped on Saturday due to a price manipulation attack on the lending protocol Tectonic, resulting in an estimated loss of around $75 million. The attacker inflated the price of Tectonic's governance token TONIC by about 100 times in 20 minutes, then borrowed real assets using inflated collateral from the protocol.

The tactic is not novel; the 2022 Mango Markets incident followed the same pattern. Find a token with low liquidity, pump up the price, and borrow real assets against the inflated market cap. The validating nodes swiftly froze the chain, with about $60 million of the stolen funds remaining on the Cronos chain, and only about $6 million bridged to Ethereum. Crypto.com CEO Kris Marsalek stated that the exchange and app were unaffected.

A chain being halted to contain losses ironically exposes its centralization. The number and distribution of validation nodes on Cronos have long been a point of contention in the industry, and the speed of this halt from decision to execution makes it harder to uphold the decentralized narrative.

SemiAnalysis Decomposes New Cloud Vendor Security Black Hole: One API Sees All Tenant Data

SemiAnalysis has released a lengthy report stating that during a security test on a new cloud vendor (neocloud), they were able to access all tenant logs and metrics data through an exposed Prometheus API. The tenant list includes AI research institutions, banks, telecommunications providers, and even the country's national intelligence agency.

The new cloud vendors are a group of GPU cloud providers that have seen explosive AI compute demand in the past two years, with companies like CoreWeave, Lambda, Together AI falling into this category. SemiAnalysis points out that these companies have expanded their computational capabilities much faster than their security infrastructure. Traditional cloud computing fundamentals such as multi-tenancy isolation, container escape prevention, and network segmentation are widely lacking in these new cloud vendors.

For AI companies that distribute training tasks across multiple vendors, this poses a direct threat. Training data and model weights are the most critical assets of AI companies, and if the security level of cloud infrastructure remains at "works for now," data leakage is only a matter of time.

Collapse of Himalayan Glacier Leaves Nearly 800 Dead and Over 3,000 Missing

The glacier fractured at an altitude of about 5,200 meters, falling 1,200 meters, carrying rocks and mud into the Ronti Gad, destroying multiple villages in Nepal and China's Tibet. The Red Cross estimates that about 90,000 people have been affected, with rescue efforts repeatedly interrupted by severe weather.

Michael Saylor Makes Post Hinting Strategy May Resume Bitcoin Purchases After Two-Month Pause

With BTC's price reaching around $79,000, Strategy's holdings of 840,000 bitcoins have an unrealized gain of about $2.8 billion. It is noteworthy that Strategy has recently started selling small amounts of bitcoin to pay preferred stock dividends and buybacks, deviating from Saylor's long-held "never sell" mantra.
