What did God V say at the Devcon6 opening ceremony

Read this article in 14 Minutes
After three years, Devcon6 was finally held in Bogota, Colombia.

Devcon is an annual offline gathering hosted by the Ethereum Foundation that brings together the largest and most core developers of the Ethereum community. Its history can even be traced back to a small gathering (DevCON-0) held in Berlin, Germany, one year before the launch of the Ethereum blockchain.

However, it has been three years since the last Devcon5 held in Osaka, Japan, was postponed due to the pandemic. Now Devcon6 will finally take place on October 11-14 in Bogota, Colombia, one of the most active and popular cities in Latin America, attracting developers and industry practitioners from all over the region to join the event.

Devcon6 will provide Ethereum builders with a huge platform to talk about the latest breakthroughs, from technology research to application design, to push Ethereum beyond the present and into the future. It was also an opportunity not to be missed, so many people, from builders to educational entities, local business leaders and policy makers, arrived early to participate in the warm-up activities.

As the co-founder of Ethereum V God will not be absent from the conference, so on the opening day of Devcon6, V God said what, BlockBeats for readers collated and compiled as follows:

1) Ethereum is a universal blockchain platform.

Compared with the general block chain network fight censorship, avoid rely on centralized parties, can promote the mutual distrust between interaction and improve the openness and transparency, general block chain platform can also create between different types of applications more powerful network effects, and constantly to reduce the barriers to entry, which ultimately is much more useful than creators initially think.

2) But now almost every new blockchain is a general-purpose blockchain.

The blocks of these blockchains contain a series of transaction information, and the generation of each block needs to be confirmed and reached consensus by many nodes.

3) The information (status) kept on the blockchain is composed of a series of accounts.

These accounts come in two types, an externally owned account (EOA) and a contract account. The EOA account represents the user. If the user has ETH, the ETH is stored in the EOA. A contract account is an on-chain computer program with a piece of code and internal storage.

The specific contract account is as follows:

Example of packaged transaction information in a block.

4) Gas is the "unit" of Ethereum resource consumption.

Several scenarios of Gas consumption:

- A basic transaction typically costs 21,000 Gas;

- Usually a single calculation consumes about 2-10 Gas;

- An edit store consumes 5000 Gas;

- Each byte of data consumes 16 Gas and zero bytes is 4 Gas.

If the user sends transaction information that has been stored in the block, he must pay a fee proportional to the Gas consumed by the transaction, mainly the base fee and the fee that he wishes to prioritize the package payment.

The basic Gas fee will be destroyed and the value determined by the agreement; The priority fee is paid to the block proposer; Each block can consume up to 30 million Gas.

5) All the information in the block for one transaction

6) High-level programming language

7) PoS consensus mechanism

It can become a verification node by storing 32 ETH nodes. Times on Ethereum are counted in units of 12 seconds, called slots. Each slot is assigned a different validation node to propose a new block. If it completes its task, a valid block will fill the slot, otherwise the slot will be passed empty.

The income of the verification node comes from the in-agreement rewards, the priority fee of the transaction and the MEV, and the verification node can exit at any time.

8) Casper FFG is a "deterministic tool", which means that Casper FFG regulates the deterministic rules of the block and can check the determinism of the block after the event has occurred. The FFG mechanism is decoupled from chain growth and can be attached as a standalone component to any available blockchain protocol to provide block certainty.

An epoch contains 32 slots, which is votes for the entire network. After the proof, the supermajority vote of the second verification node will confirm the epoch, and Finalization is the security guarantee of ETH.

9) Merkle trees is a kind of tree data structure in cryptography and computer science. Each leaf node takes the hash of the data block as the label, and other nodes except the leaf node take the encrypted hash of its child node label as the label. Merkle trees can efficiently and securely verify the contents of blockchain data structures.

Merkle trees on Ethereum are a very efficient way to verify what's happening on the block.

Any change to the data that Merkle trees point to will result in a change in the node hash. Since the hash value stored in each parent node depends on the data contained in the child node, the change of the data in the child node will cause the change of the parent node hash, and this effect is a chain reaction, from the leaf node to the root node.

10) For users, L2 protocol is becoming more and more popular, which transfers part of the information needed to be processed by L1 to L2, inherits the security of L1, and L1 will obtain higher scalability.

Right now, from a user perspective, the L2 experience is just as efficient as L1, and the app works the same way, but at a much lower cost.

11) Future directions

- The Merge is complete, but the PoS mechanism can be improved with slots Final certainty;

- The Surge: improve scalability through rollups, danksharding, and ZK-SNARK;

- The Verge: replace Ethereum Merkle trees with more efficient data structures, making Ethereum nodes lighter (stateless clients);

- The Perge: used to clean up old data and technical debt;

- The Splurge: a useful toolkit for account abstraction, EVM improvements, PBS, etc.
