"Bonnie and Clyde" arrested, $4 billion bitcoin theft solved

The fact that $70 million worth of assets were stolen a few years ago, only to be recovered a few years later and their value increased by dozens of times, is probably unique to the cryptocurrency industry.

On February 9, the U.S. Department of Justice announced that it had arrested two suspects and seized more than $4 billion worth of Bitcoin. And these tens of thousands of bitcoins, with a super theft in August 2016.

6 年后，美国司法部通过种种线索找到了夫妻俩：34 岁的 Ilya Lichtenstein 和他 31 岁的妻子 Heather Rhiannon Morgan。Lichtenstein 如今已是一家科技公司的联合创始人，Morgan 也有不少身份，知名媒体《福布斯》的撰稿人，同时也是一位 Rapper。

追踪过程

有意思的是，司法部给出的罪名是洗钱，而非偷盗。找到他们的时候，两人已经洗掉了 2.5 万枚比特币。剩下的超 9 万枚比特币，已经转移到了司法部的钱包下。

在司法部的报告中，警方大概梳理了他们是如何追踪路径。

上图仅是警方自己做的一个简要梳理，简单来说，从 2017 年 1 月或前后开始，警方发现一部分被盗的比特币从相关地址中转出，开始尝试隐藏踪迹。经过一系列努力的追查，包括暗网、匿名币等等渠道，警方最终追踪到了他们夫妻俩。

值得关注的是，2022 年 1 月 31 日，执法部门通过解密保存在 Lichtenstein 的云存储帐户中的文件，获得了对其地址的访问权限。打开后发现，该文件包含 2,000 个虚拟货币地址的列表，以及相应的私钥。

警方查了一下地址，发现几乎所有地址都与黑客直接相关。于是，在 2022 年 1 月 31 日至 2022 年 2 月 1 日期间，执法部门获准扣押了钱包里剩余的 94,636 个比特币，价值 36.29 亿美元。

市场反应

此次事件的当事方 Bitfinex 第一时间也发了公告，称将与美国司法部合作并遵循适当的法律程序来确立返还被盗比特币的权利，并在收到追回资产之日起 18 个月内使用相当于追回净资金的 80% 的金额回购和销毁 UNUS SED LEO Token。

这个公告直接带动了 Bitfinex 平台币 LEO 的剧烈波动。其实在美国司法部发布报告前，LEO 已经开始了令人匪夷所思的上涨。如果大家关注 LEO 这个 Token 会发现，LEO 几乎就是一个 Stablecoin，长期稳定在 1 美元，甚至连血洗加密货币市场的 2020「312」那天，LEO 几乎都没有动，长期稳定在私募价格。

除了 LEO，Recovery Right Token 也在瞬间直线拉升。这也是被盗案相关概念 Token。

2016 年，在被盗案发生后，Bitfinex 尝试赔偿。平台先发行了 BFX Token，以 1 美元兑换 1 BFX 的比例发给损失的用户。平台宣布，可以将 BFX 转换为 iFinex 的股权，这也是部分 BFX 持有人最终成为 Bitfinex 股东的原因。8 个月后，所有 BFX 持有者的 BFX 资产都以 1 美元的价格被赎回。

On February 25, 2019, With the assistance of the US government, Bitfinex recovered 28 Bitcoins, which were converted into US dollars and distributed to RRT holders as required.  

In August 2020, The Bitfinex platform offered a huge reward of up to $400 million to anyone who could help find the stolen 120,000 Bitcoins.
