The key to Kusama's scalable multi-chain architecture is that parallel chains rent a slot on the relay chain to connect to the network through a permission-free auction. As Polkadot's Canary Network, Kusama will first launch parallel chain auctions for testing and optimization. The parallel chain is likely to have been gradually launched on the Kusama network at first, so as to ensure that everything goes smoothly, but we are not promising anything, expect chaos!

How can teams participate?

Different teams take different paths to start parallel chains on Kusama, but a normal process might look like this:

· Design a parallel chain and use Substrate to create it

· Test and optimize locally, then test on the Rococo test network

· Determine auction strategies for slot leases

· Participate in the auction and bid

· Deploy on acquired slots after the lease period begins

· At the end of the lease period, renew the lease by participating in another auction

Auction mechanism

Parallel chain slot auctions follow an optimized candle auction format in which participants do not know when the auction will end, preventing last-minute bidding strategies to get a more accurate representation of the price of slot auctions.

1. The team uploads their parallel chain code and passes it through 1) continuous   6 week Lease Range and 2) the number of KSMs they are willing to lock in for the selected Lease Term to start bidding.

2. Public bidding will continue during the Auction. Teams can see bids for other projects and increase their bids over time to remain competitive throughout the auction process.

3. At the end of the auction, the exact time of the end of the auction is randomly determined by the verifiable random function (VRF).

4. The amount of KSM bid by the winning team shall be locked during the lease period and unlocked upon expiration. The parallel chain automatically connects to the relay chain at the beginning of the lease.

5. Teams can extend the lease by winning another auction before the current lease ends.

Slot all the credit

Some teams may choose to crowdfund their slot leases using Kusama's built-in CrowdLoan mechanism, which lets them win parallel chains by voluntarily locking their KSM until their slot leases end. Teams can reward their supporters as they see fit and design their crowdloans in various ways and host them on Kusama or other third party platforms.

The typical process of crowdlending on the Kusama platform is as follows:

1. The team creates a CrowdLoan campaign, sets the maximum crowdloan amount required and the end date of the campaign (considering the possibility of losing one or more auctions, the team can launch a CrowdLoan campaign for multiple auctions), and invites their community to participate.

CrowdLoan contributors initiate a special transaction to assign transferable KSM to the campaign's index (this is different from a normal send transaction in that contributors should not send KSM directly to an external account).

3. KSM contributors can submit during the crowdlending campaign, or before winning the auction, up to the maximum crowdlending amount set by the Parallel Chain team at the time of creating the campaign.

4. All KSM contributions to the campaign will remain locked up during the lease term if there is sufficient support to win the auction. The team deploys the chain at the beginning of the lease.

5. The KSM of Zondai.com can be unlocked and returned to those contributors at the end of the lease period. If the team does not win the auction at the end of the CrowdLoan campaign, the contributor's KSM can be unlocked at the end of the campaign.

How to protect yourself from audience loan fraud

Unfortunately, fraud is a real threat in the blockchain space and requires vigilance. Fake crowdlending can be an attractive target for scammers. We hope everyone remains vigilant to protect yourself and your non-refundable crypto assets. If you suspect you've been duped, email the Web3 Foundation support team. mailto:support@web3.foundation

Some basic rules of thumb:

· Don't share your mnemonic words or account passwords.

· Remember, it's easy for scammers to impersonate others online.

· If you are participating in a local Crowdloan on Kusama (see FAQ below), never send your KSM to an address. Local CrowdLoan is traded through a special deal with Kusama, using a so-called Campaign Index, where your KSM contribution remains locked up until the end of the lease. Proper teams will not require you to send your KSM to an address to participate in Kusama-Native Crowdloan. (Don't worry, PolkaWorld will be the first to publish a tutorial on Kusama's native Crowdloan.)

· If you are participating in a non-local CrowdLoan event, please feel free to check with the parallel chain team's official channels for details on how to participate. Keep in mind that scammers may try to impersonate official channels and team members. Never participate in a crowd you don't trust, and never send tokens to people you don't trust.

· Remember that if you are cheated, there is no way to recover your funds.

Q&A

About parallel chains

1. How many parallel chain slots are available?

Based on theoretical calculations, the current goal and expectation is that Admiral Kusama will have approximately. 100  Three parallel chain slots are available, but future optimizations (such as secondary relay chains) may increase this number further. However, it will take some time for Kusama to fully support 100 parallel chain slots, and they will most likely be added to the system slowly over time. Not all slots will be allocated through a parallel chain slot auction (the auction starts after a successful vote on the chain), as some of them are system parallel chains and parallel threads initiated through governance.

2. How/when to enable parallel threads?

We expect parallel threading to be enabled within a few months of parallel chains being enabled. As with other network upgrades, it will need to be enabled through on-chain governance.

Leasing and Auction

1. What happens to the KSM locked up during the lease term?

For the duration of a parallel chain lease, the locked KSM remains in the account that the parallel chain team is using to bid for slot auctions (or, in the case of crowdlending, locked in a campaign index) and remains in place, not used for staking or other purposes such as staking. At the end of the slot rental period, anyone can ask to unlock the entire KSM, after which the tokens can again be freely transferred, withdrawn, and pledged.

For crowdlending, the contributed KSM will be locked from the start of the contribution until the end of the lease term, unless the crowdlending campaign fails to obtain the right to use the slots through an auction, in which case the contributed KSM can be unlocked at the end of the campaign and returned by the Parallel Chain team. All fundraising must be returned before the crowdlending activity is completely removed from the system.

2. How much does it cost to rent a slot?

The cost of renting parallel chain slots will be entirely dependent on market supply and demand, so it is difficult to make any meaningful estimate of bid requests. However, it is important to note that the actual cost of parallel chain slots does not equal the price of parallel chain bidding. Because parallel-linked KSMs (bonds) are returned at the end of a slot lease, the best definition of the actual cost of running a parallel chain is the opportunity cost of KSM not staking during the lease. The need to run a collector is an additional but relatively small cost. In general, for high-throughput applications, we expect parallel chains to be more economical than using smart contracts or building separate blockchains.

3. What if the parallel chain team does not succeed in the slot auction?

They will need to participate in subsequent auctions and bid again. Once the Parallel Threading feature goes live (expected within a few months of Parallel Chain's release), the Parallel Chain team will have the option of accessing Kusama as a parallel thread. For a crowdlending campaign, you can set up the campaign to run several auctions continuously to increase the chances of winning a slot. If a team has not earned a slot before the end of the crowdlending campaign it has set up, the contributed KSM can be unlocked. If the team wants to remain in the auction, it needs to launch a new bid.

4. What happens when the slot lease for the parallel chain ends? Will the parallel chain team lose slots entirely?

At the end of the lease period, the slots will be re-auctioned, and if the parallel chain team wishes to keep the slots, the team will have to bid again. Parallel chain slots are interchangeable, so teams don't have to bid on the same slot all the time. To avoid any downtime of connection and to minimize the risk of losing subsequent auctions, teams can bid and secure adjacent slot locations before the current lease period ends. Once parallel threading is enabled, the team can also choose to connect to Kusama as a parallel thread.

5. How to follow up the status of auction in real time?

Users with active accounts on Kusama will be able to follow ongoing auctions in real time on Polkadot.js. There are also a number of third-party auction platforms under development, although the Web3 Foundation cannot guarantee their accuracy or security, so do your own research.

6. Other than candle auction, is there any other way to get parallel chain slots?

As aParallel chains of common infrastructureYou can get a slot by governance voting. Commonweal parallel chains are seen as parallel chains of ecological shared benefits, in the sense that they will benefit the entire network. For example, a bridge over Kusama could connect to an external network like Bitcoin or Ethereum. Such chains are designated by network governance as "commonweal" parallel chains, which can be bypassed by the auction process by voting for chains to allocate slots above the relay chain. Commonweal parallel chains can be thought of as system-level and common-use chains that provide functionality and benefits to the network for builders to use.

All the credit

1. What is parallel chain slot crowdlending and how can I participate?

Parallel chain teams may or may not choose to use Kusama's CrowdLoan mechanism to help support their parallel chain slot rental bid. In order to participate in crowdlending, users agree to lock a portion of KSM for the duration of the parallel chain slot lease, which can then be unlocked. To take part in staking, you must have a transferable KSM balance, so if your token is currently locked up because of staking, you need to unbond it before staking. The unbundling period of Kusama network is currently 7 days.

The details of individual crowdlending activities and the joining process will be determined and communicated by the respective parallel chain teams.

Important note: Kusama's local crowdlending mechanism does not require users to send KSM from their wallet/account to a third party address to participate in crowdlending. Local CrowdLoan makes special transactions by using what is called the Campaign Index, so the contributed KSM is locked in the active index (if the auction is successful, the contributed KSM is locked in from the start of the contribution until the end of the lease). Legitimate teams that run CrowdLoan on Kusama will not require you to send tokens to their address to participate. However, some teams may choose to use other mechanisms or platforms for crowdlending activities. In this case, make sure you never send a token to anyone you don't trust. Confirm with the team's official channels to learn how to participate.

2. What are the benefits of participating in the crowdlending campaign?

In addition to the non-material benefits of supporting the success of the parallel chain team, participating in crowdlending activities may (or may not) receive additional rewards from the team. The project team that obtains the required KSM from the community can choose the type of reward, if any, to reward the participant in order to lock in their KSM when winning the bid. The type of reward for a project that successfully obtains a secure parallel chain slot is entirely up to the project team and is not influenced by any influence from the Web3 Foundation. Rewards will take many forms and may vary widely in different projects, ranging from local tokens on the network to specific goods or rights, designed by the project team and accepted by community members.

3. What does "natively on Kusama" mean about crowdlending? What are the other options?

Natively CrowdLoan on Kusama is to use the CrowdLoan module to interact directly with Kusama and not involve third parties. A crowdloan participant local to Kusama must have a transferable balance (unlocked, vesting, management, etc.). Teams can also choose to crowdlend through other means, including third-party platforms such as custodians and exchanges.

However, some crowdlending activities may use other mechanisms or platforms (such as exchanges or custodians) to conduct non-local auctions. In this case, make sure you trust all parties involved, and make sure you never send a token to anyone you don't trust. Confirm with the team's official channels to learn how to participate.

4. Why is there an upper limit to the total contribution of crowd lending activities?

The reason for the maximum contribution is that it allows the team to set an upper limit on rewards for contributors who are willing to support them. For example, if the team decides to reward each KSM contributor with their local token, this setting can set the maximum token distribution they are willing to make. Teams can choose to reward contributors in any way they see fit (or not), and the Web3 Foundation has no opinion on the content of these rewards.
