He faces up to five years in prison.

An engineer at Elon Musk's SpaceX company has pleaded guilty to conspiring with others to commit bond fraud by selling insider trading information on the dark web, the US Justice Department and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) said on Thursday.

The SEC said it was the first time it had launched an enforcement action over securities violations on the dark web. The engineer, James Roland Jones, faces up to five years in prison, the Justice Department said. No date has been set for a verdict in the case.

It is understood that from 2016 to 2017, he conspired with another person to access various dark web markets, including a website that claimed to be an insider trading forum looking for material and non-public information to use in his securities trading. Mr. Jones also set up a scam to sell information he falsely claimed to have obtained through insider trading on the dark web, which several users had purchased and traded using Bitcoin.
