Arthur Hayes, the founder and former CEO of cryptocurrency trading platform BitMex, is likely to turn himself in to US authorities next month, federal prosecutors said.
Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Jessica Greenwood told a federal judge in a Feb. 16 court transcript that her team has been in talks with Hayes' lawyers about turning herself in to U.S. authorities. Greenwood also said she has been in touch with BitMex co-founder Ben DeLo and company employee Gregory Dwyer.
The three were charged in October 2020 with violating the Bank Secrecy Act. A fourth defendant, Samuel Reed, Bitmex's former CTO, was arrested last year and has since been released on bail. On Feb. 4, Vanity Fair published an article on the subjectA brief introduction to the Hayes and BitMEX events.
Greenwood said Hayes would likely continue to live abroad and would make an online appearance in Hawaii at an early stage of the legal process. If the case goes to trial, he will go to New York.
Another Bitmex co-founder Ben Delo plans to turn himself in in New York, but he will need help entering the US because he lives in the UK, which currently bans visitors from the country. The third defendant, Gregory Dwyer, lives in Bermuda and has no plans to turn himself in, but federal prosecutors have begun extradition proceedings, his lawyer said.
Cryptocurrency derivatives platform BitMex, along with founder Arthur Hayes, co-founder Ben Delo and former CTO Samuel Reed, have been indicted by US authorities in a lawsuit that accuses them of racketeering, money laundering and market manipulation, according to a previous report by Rhythmech. Samuel Reed, the firm's former CTO, was subsequently arrested.
