Rhythm BlockBeats: can you make a brief introduction of yourself and your Sperax?

Joe Yu: my name is Joe, who graduated from the UCLA mathematics department, major in computer mathematics, minor in philosophy. I in June last year to join Sperax team, as a researcher. This year I participated in the Sperax published in the IEEE INFOCOM EdgeBlock paper, is one of the authors, is also the paper speaker. Sperax is launched by leading cryptographers in North America, by the top block chain vc institutions OV support a new generation of financial chain project. Sperax in silicon valley Menlo Park was established in 2018 in the United States, we are now a member of the distributed mainly in the United States, Singapore and China.

Rhythmic BlockBeats: We know that Sperax'S BDLS is a new generation consensus protocol created based on BFT. Please introduce BDLS to us first.

Joe Yu: Sperax's BDLS Consensus protocol is part of the Byzantine fault tolerance protocol, also known as the BFT Consensus protocol. The name BDLS comes from the famous protocol in modern cryptography - DLS protocol. Because our consensus protocol is to innovate the traditional DLS protocol and apply it to the blockchain. Blockchain is the English word for Blockchain, so we have added a letter B before DLS to indicate that it is the DLS protocol of the Blockchain, so it is the BDLS protocol.

The biggest difference between BDLS protocol and other blockchain consensus protocols lies in the network model selected at the time of design. The BFT protocol used in blockchain generally adopts the "synchronous network model". This model is concise, but it does not reflect the real Internet environment well. So what is the best network model to simulate the real Internet environment? Partial Asynchronous Network Model. Asynchronous, is not synchronous meaning, so it can also be said that the partial asynchronous network model. It is very important to choose the network model, which is related to the security of the whole block chain. In a more realistic model, there will be many security challenges that simple network models will not face. One of the most critical safety problems is the activity of the block chain, called Liveness. If we only use the simple synchronous network model to design our blockchain, we will not be able to detect some terrible security risks.

Because our BDLS agreement, is close to the real Internet based asynchronous network model "part of" design, so we in the design, consider to these under the synchronous network model, there will be no security problems. And as a result, our block chain on security, have a lot of ascension.

Rhythmical BlockBeats: Besides security, is BDLS better than the existing BFT consensus agreement in any other dimension?

Joe Yu: In addition to the special design and significant improvements in security, the BDLS Consensus protocol has also been greatly improved in terms of efficiency. The efficiency of blockchain can be compared from many perspectives. The most common is "scalability", which is the visual classification in English. However, there is also a very important aspect, which is the complexity of communication required by the block chain to complete the consensus. English is the communciation complextity. It takes several rounds of communication to complete the consensus.

Generally the BFT consensus agreement, all need communication complexity of O (n ^ 2). Even if is one of the fastest, but also need communication complexity of O (n). Also said, although need not square, but also need to be multiplied by 7. BDLS agreement, the required communication complexity, only O (4 n). Compared to before the fastest 7 n, nearly twice as fast. So we block chain efficiency was greatly improved.

Rhythm BlockBeats: so BDLS is how to solve the problems in existing PoS?

Joe Yu: BDLS is mainly to solve the two major problems of the existing PoS blockchain: one is security, the other is efficiency. In order to improve security, we adopt part of asynchronous network model to design our protocol. In order to improve the efficiency, we have greatly improved the communication efficiency of the protocol, namely, the communication complexity mentioned earlier.

Rhythmical BlockBeats: As you can see from the recent popularity of DeFi, people seem to be more concerned about landing now. It seems that the story of the protocol layer is no longer popular. What do you think of this phenomenon?

Joe Yu: I've been thinking myself, and I personally think there are two points:

The first point is that human beings invent science and technology to serve human beings in the end. Therefore, of course, we should not only pay attention to the underlying technology, but also pay attention to its application and landing. But we need to realize that if we only talk about applications and landing, and we ignore the protocol layer, the infrastructure that supports these applications and landing, then we are talking about castles in the air.

The second point is the telling of the story. Block chain industry has a huge problem, not a technology problem, but the problem of communication, or was it a matter of how to tell a story. How can the deep block chain of professional technology, tell the public, let the public can understand, can be happy, I think it's about every block chain industry practitioners need to think seriously about the problem.

In recent years, there have been obvious changes in the rhythm of BlockBeats: Public chain stories have gradually moved from a large and complete field to a subdivision field. This year, we have seen many public chain stories born based on the financial direction, Sperax is one of them. How do you think of this phenomenon? By the way, what do you think of the current situation of DeFi? Will there be any layout after that in the DeFi domain?

Joe Yu: The first question, I would say is aboutBlock chain specialization, specialization. Personally, I think it is a reflection of specialization and an important sign of the industry's beginning to mature to move from the big to the small. It is as if the transformation of human knowledge from a general hodgepodge to so many specialized disciplines today is a reflection of human intellectual maturity.

The second question,I think it is about the direction of "finance" in the blockchain. The birth of block chain technology and finance are inseparable, the best example is the COINS. And now DeFi personally, I think first landing field block chain technology, is the financial sector.

The last question I think concerns DeFi. DeFi has been receiving intense attention from the blockchain industry since June this year. The value of tokens in the global DeFi lockup has more than quadrupled from $1 billion to $4.5 billion. In short, DeFi can fire for a reason. But on the other hand, each of us blockchain practitioners, also want to keep calm. We can ask ourselves: is DeFi now "overheated"? Is the infrastructure to support DeFi really complete?

Rhythm BlockBeats: Speaking of DeFi, I have to mention that ethereum congestion, which is very serious right now, is actually an opportunity for other public chains. There may be at least half a year or so before ETH2.0 launches. How do Sperax plan to use this time lag to attract your users after that?

Joe Yu:Now is a good window period of new public chain. Especially with the development of the DEFI project, the demand for the Ethereum network is getting higher and higher, my uniswap fee is $5 per transaction... These are not very retail-friendly. However, because of the congestion on ethereum, many users chose USDT on the wave platform, including FTX's SBF's new trading platform solana, and so on. Sperax is characterized by its ability to achieve high performance while ensuring safety. Meanwhile, our VIRTUAL machine (SVM) is also compatible with Ethereum virtual machine (EVM), and Defi applications can also be seamlessly plugged into Sperax's network.

Active BlockBeats: I remember that the paper Sperax: An Approach To Defeat Long Range Attacks In Blockchains created by your team some time ago was accepted by IEEE INFOCOM EdgeBlock Branch, the top international academic conference In computer science, and was invited To participate In 2020 IEEE INFOCOM To give a theme report. Could you give us some details about the process of being hired and attending the presentation?

Joe Yu: I participated in the research and writing process of this paper and was one of the authors. And I am honored to be the keynote speaker for this paper. This paper was presented at the IEEE INFOCOM Academic Conference. The subject of computer science is different from other subjects. The best papers are not published in academic journals, but in academic conferences. IEEE INFOCOM is the world's top Class A conference in computer science, covering both theoretical and systems design research. This year's conference was attended by researchers from companies and academic institutions, including Microsoft, Amazon, Carnegie Mellon University, Columbia University, Tsinghua University, and the University of Hong Kong.

IEEE is relatively strict in relevant researches on blockchain, and there are few finalists. As far as I know, only Ethereum and ZCASH have been finalists before. Our team has always believed that serious and rigorous academic research is the foundation of blockchain projects. This academic result is a confirmation of the research results of our team, and will further strengthen the direction of Sperax team to continue its in-depth research.

BlockBeats: Ok, so before this AMA, we have solicited some questions from our community members. I hope we can ask Joe Yu to answer them. Some users are very concerned about public offering, and it is said in the market that Sperax is going to do public offering recently. Recently, many well-known academic public chain projects have successively chosen to do public offering. May I ask why they choose to do public offering at this time point? Is it because you think the market is getting better?

Joe Yu: as a project initiated by the north American top cryptographers, we don't want to chase the tuyere. The public offering is also has been in our plan. In march this year when we communicated and south Korean community, at the end of our test network after will do a public offering in the world. The public offering purpose mainly is to let more people know our project, have more money to user participation, let Sperax can build a global community.

Rhythm BlockBeats: or about public offerings, you may be more concerned about the public offering after the SPA line the trading platform in the meeting? Or team online exchanges in the future do what preparation, that what is the plan for the future?

Joe Yu: We were, are and always will be doing our best to create technical value and market return for the Sperax community. Now, we tentatively plan to launch the trading platform within the year.
