Chain smell

At 9:30 PM on April 10, Beijing time, the second program of "Crypto Tonight", an online cryptocurrency talk show jointly launched by Winkrypto, lianwen and Yama, started smoothly. Kyle Samani  In the "quick questions and answers" section, I expressed my views on CeFi and DeFi. The content is edited.

The following is the text version of Kyle Samani access content, enjoy ~

Hi, my name is Kyle Samani and I'm the co-founder and managing partner of blockchain investment firm Multicoin Capital. We specialize in blockchain and cryptocurrency investments with two funds investing in this area. We have a hedge fund and a venture capital fund that invest in the primary and secondary markets of cryptocurrencies.

I spend most of my time reading about the cryptocurrency world and talking to other investors and entrepreneurs in the field. I'm also very active in the operations of the companies we invest in, helping them better handle everything from exchange currency to token design, corporate development strategy, recruitment, and so on.

Yama: we know that the investment objective of Multicoin is "theme-driven", Kyle you wrote in the article. You've written a lot about investing not just in cryptography, but in tesla... Can you tell us where you came up with the idea to write so many quality articles? Or what inspired you?

Kyle Samani: I started writing in 2013. I set a New Year's resolution for 2013: write three blog posts a week. I did it! That year I wrote a total of & NBSP; 156 & have spent The article.

When I started writing, I was inspired primarily by the traditional venture capitalists I've been following, such as Fred Wilson of union square Ventures and Mark Suster of Upfront Ventures. At that time, I didn't try to put cause and effect together, I tried to imitate them, and I just started writing.

Although I didn't realize it at the time, the constant writing gave me the opportunity to create Multicoin Capital. I couldn't write the way I do now -- in quantity and in quality -- if I didn't have the practical foundation.

Yama: you have invested in several Layer 1 projects such as Solana, Algoland and Nervos. Which project is your favorite?

Kyle Samani: although a lot of people in the encryption space have lost interest in the new smart contract platform, we haven't. In fact, we expect more from these opportunities than ever before.

I moved into encryption in 2016 because I wanted to see real web page-level applications with minimal capacity and trust. We're now starting to see systems like this really support a global user base. Each new blockchain project has different strengths, which is why we invest in each of them.

For example, we invested in Nervos because they are really focused on user adoption and Layer 2 capacity expansion in China. At the same time, we invested in Near because they are the leading team in building the shard process. If I had to pick just one, I'd pick Solana. Solana is transitioning from a test network to a main network, and the project really focuses on Layer 1 capacity expansion through pure engineering. We see Solana as an absolute leader in three areas: 1) high throughput; 2) minimum delay; 3) lowest transaction costs.

The saying "Layer 1 does not scale" is very popular. When people saw that Solana could actually support 50,000 transactions per second in real-world parameters, they thought there must be a trick. But counterintuitively, Solana is not actually trying to deploy any new techniques. The fancy new tricks are things like Layer 2 and sharding, which are completely unproven. Solana, on the other hand, is focused on the work we know, focused on & NBSP; Layer 1, which focuses on pure engineering. I think the Solana protocol and implementation is a marvel of engineering.

Yama: haha, those of you in Beijing will know that Solana is not only a shopping mall near chaoyang park in Beijing, but also a cool Layer 1 project. Third question, what do you think of DeFi?

Kyle Samani: DeFi is part of the open financial, open financial is a part of our "Mega Theses", we wrote an article about this. I personally believe that DeFi will replace the huge volume of CeFi globally in the next 10 years. So we are investors in DeFi protocol.

When evaluating DeFi protocols, we often focus on understanding how each DeFi protocol can exceed the CeFi version in every way. This is often difficult to do. But as the DeFi ecosystem continues to mature, it will be much easier to spot such opportunities.
