Beating AI News Flash: OpenAI has announced the acquisition of developer tools startup Pierre Computer, planning to add code hosting capabilities to Codex. Previously, Codex mainly helped developers write and modify code; now OpenAI aims to take over code storage and management as well, directly competing with Microsoft's GitHub.
Pierre's two open-source tools, Trees and Diffs, are already used in Codex, responsible for browsing project files and reviewing code changes, respectively. What OpenAI is also interested in this time is Pierre's commercial code hosting service, Code Storage.
Code Storage can save code, record modification history, and provide APIs that allow AI Agents to directly create and manage code repositories, supporting multiple Agents operating simultaneously. Currently, AI programming products such as Lovable, Bolt, and Amp are already using it.
OpenAI itself is also revamping its code management system. On November 2, OpenAI unveiled its in-house developed Pando, specifically designed to address performance issues when a large number of Agents write code and submit changes simultaneously. Pando has already been deployed internally at OpenAI, reducing the median time for code pushes by nearly 80%.
After the acquisition is completed, OpenAI will gradually integrate Code Storage into Codex. Pierre's existing open-source projects will continue to remain open source.
