Polygon community proposal for a hard fork to recover approximately 70.49 million stolen POL tokens

BlockBeats news, November 5 — According to the Polygon community forum, the community has submitted a PIP proposal to, through a coordinated hard fork, zero out approximately 70.49 million native POL on blocked attacker addresses and transfer it to victim-designated recovery addresses, involving stolen funds from two security incidents at Polymarket and Binance.

The proposal states that from October 29 to 30, Polymarket and Binance suffered security incidents in succession, with stolen native POL flowing into Polygon PoS attacker addresses; at the request of relevant parties, block-producing nodes have added these addresses to the Bor transaction blacklist. Currently, 5 attacker-controlled addresses hold a total of approximately 70.49 million POL, of which about 23.86 million (4 addresses) are related to Polymarket and about 46.63 million (1 address) are related to Binance. The blacklist can only prevent funds from being transferred out, but cannot return the assets, and the attackers are still attempting to bypass it.

The proposal requires zeroing the native POL balances of the listed addresses at a fixed block and crediting an equal amount to verified recovery addresses: Polymarket is 0x3dcE0a2....a6440b4D952, Binance is 0xd9fd391....610b80; the total supply remains unchanged, and the scope is limited to the listed native POL. The proposers are Polymarket and Binance, and the proposal will be presented at the Polygon protocol governance meeting on November 5 at 14:30 UTC; if passed, client development and Amoy testing are expected to be completed in about two weeks. The proposal emphasizes that this is an extreme measure and should not be used as a normal precedent.
