BlockBeats news, November 2 - Bitmine Chairman Thomas "Tom" Lee stated in a latest announcement: "Late last week, Binance suffered a hack, with $6.3 billion in customer funds stolen. According to Binance and other media reports, the breach originated from contractors infiltrating Binance's corporate infrastructure. The FBI has named North Korea as the perpetrator. Although this is a terrifying development, in my view, the crypto market's relatively mild reaction is very constructive, especially compared to the market response to previous large-scale crypto thefts."
"In February 2025, Bybit was similarly hacked by North Korea (with a completely different modus operandi), with $1.5 billion in customer crypto assets stolen. On the day the Bybit theft was announced, ETH fell 8%, and within a week it dropped 20%. In contrast, since the Binance theft was disclosed, ETH has only fallen 4%. We believe that although the scale of this theft is about four times that of the previous one, the market's reaction has been much milder," Lee continued.
Bitmine believes there are 6 reasons explaining why the market reaction to the Binance theft was milder. They are:
· Binance has sufficient financial capacity to bear all customer losses. · There has been no chain collapse of DeFi protocols like after the Bybit theft.
· The industry's rapid action reduced potential losses by 50%.
· The FBI named North Korea (DPRK) as responsible within 2 days of the theft. Historically, authorities have taken up to 180 days to identify DPRK in previous theft cases.
· The breach was a "corporate infiltration" of Binance's infrastructure, not a vulnerability in the blockchain itself.
· Limited downside price space is a signal that the crypto "bull market" is ongoing, despite recent price declines.
Tom Lee stated that overall, Bitmine believes this indicates the crypto industry is becoming increasingly resilient and more capable of absorbing these nation-state attacks targeting financial infrastructure.
