OpenRouter's annualized token throughput surpasses 1 quadrillion, with usage over the past 9 weeks exceeding all previous historical usage combined.

Beating AI News Flash: Token consumption on AI model aggregation platform OpenRouter has surged again.

In the week of October 26, the platform processed approximately 194 trillion tokens, with annualized throughput exceeding 10 quadrillion (10¹⁶) for the first time.

Processing volume over the past 9 weeks exceeded the platform's total over the previous approximately 3 years and 3 months combined.

One of the main forces driving growth is AI Agents. Official OpenRouter data shows that on February 6 of this year, Agent token consumption surpassed human interaction for the first time. By the last week of September, the former had reached approximately 7 times the latter. Each step an Agent executes often requires resubmitting instructions, tool definitions, and prior operation records. The longer the task, the more context is repeatedly processed.

OpenRouter's growth has also attracted payment giants. Stripe announced in August of this year that it would acquire the platform, hoping to integrate cross-model routing, token billing, and cost optimization.

Stripe buys OpenRouter for $7.5 billion, betting it can evolve from an AI traffic channel into a control point for the agent economy.
As the model becomes more like interchangeable electricity, whoever can turn the enterprise's knob to the most cost-effective and stable setting may end up at AI's tollgate.
