BlockBeats news, October 28 - According to The Information, sources familiar with the matter have revealed that OpenAI plans to procure Google's artificial intelligence chips to accelerate its efforts to reduce reliance on Nvidia. If OpenAI decides to purchase Google's Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), it would be a major victory for Google's chip business. The financial terms and other details of OpenAI's planned procurement of Google chips are currently unclear. OpenAI is recruiting an engineer to "lead the optimization" of the company's most advanced frontier models so they can run on TPUs.
The Information reported last year that OpenAI had begun using Google TPUs to reduce its dependence on Nvidia chips. This news prompted Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang to take swift action, and Nvidia subsequently entered into a new agreement with OpenAI. An OpenAI spokesperson later stated that the company "currently has no plans to exclusively use TPUs." OpenAI's job posting indicates that the company's work on optimizing models for TPUs is still in its early stages.
