Beating AI News Flash: 35-year-old Saudi national and OpenAI engineer Abdulrahman Alfozan was arrested by the FBI on October 9, suspected of installing a covert recording device in OpenAI's executive meeting room in San Francisco. The U.S. Department of Justice said he is charged with using or attempting to use a device to intercept oral communications, and if convicted, he faces a maximum of 5 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
According to the criminal complaint, company employees discovered an encrypted recording device behind a television in the meeting room around September 30. Prosecutors said the suspect had previously used internal office tools to look up the company's office address, meeting rooms, and executive meeting schedules; a chatbot account associated with his spouse also asked how to make, hide, and remotely access a continuous recording device.
OpenAI said the company used its own models to analyze the device and its origin, ultimately identifying the employee involved, and has fired him. Currently, the company has found no signs that the suspect accessed or stole model weights, source code, or customer data without authorization. The FBI is still investigating the case, and the next detention hearing is scheduled for October 19.
