Ghostty's author launches Rex terminal in public beta, promising permanently free and fully self-hosted.

动察 Beating AI News Flash: Ghostty author and HashiCorp co-founder Mitchell Hashimoto's new company Superlogical has begun public testing of Rex.

It is positioned as a direct replacement for existing terminals, with a focus on long-term sessions and remote connections. Tasks can continue running after the terminal is closed, and operations can resume when reopening or switching to another device. Previously, Rex was only in private testing with about 50 people, and the first round of public testing is only open for macOS, with invitations being sent out in batches according to the waitlist.

Rex keeps terminal sessions running in the background, without relying on the client window staying open. The macOS app itself can save local sessions and can also connect to Rex on other machines. It also provides a CLI, Lua, and a server API, allowing users to create sessions, split screens, launch programs, read terminal contents, and directly control the terminal with scripts.

Superlogical has clearly promised that Rex will always be free, and neither the client nor the server will be directly charged. Users do not need to create an account and can fully self-host. The company says it will not view or share user data.

Linux and Windows servers are already able to run, and iOS, Linux, and Windows clients are also in development, but have not yet been included in this round of testing. Superlogical has not yet announced a specific commercialization plan and will explain further before the official release.
