Beating AI News Flash: Meta's personal AI Agent Muse has encountered completely opposite treatment on Amazon and Shopify.
Amazon has blocked Muse from searching for products and shopping on behalf of users on Amazon.com, and users will directly see a notice that "unauthorized AI Agent" violates the terms of use. Amazon says Meta did not obtain permission in advance, and Muse does not proactively identify itself as an AI Agent when browsing the website.
Shopify announced almost simultaneously a deep partnership with Muse, integrating Shop Pay into all Shopify stores. Shop Pay can be understood as Shopify's one-click checkout. After users select products, they can complete checkout directly through Muse without having to go back to the merchant's website to re-enter address and payment information.
The different attitudes of the two companies stem from different business models. Amazon itself is a shopping entry point. Users originally need to search, compare, view recommendations, and then place orders within Amazon, and an external Agent could intercept this entire process.
Shopify mainly provides independent merchants with product, order, and checkout infrastructure. It does not matter whether consumers come in through Muse, ChatGPT, or Google, as long as they ultimately place orders with Shopify merchants, it gains an additional sales channel.
For Amazon, Muse may be seizing the entry point; for Shopify, Muse is more like bringing in customers.
