Beating AI News Flash: According to FT, OpenAI on Monday called on the U.S. government to lead the establishment of international AI standards and suggested that countries coordinate in assessing the capabilities and risks of AI models. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman will present the related proposal to the UN Security Council this week.
OpenAI proposed leveraging the existing network of national AI safety research institutions to establish a unified international standard for evaluating AI models, and called for the United States and overseas countries to establish secure communication channels to share emerging threats in the AI field.
OpenAI specifically warned that recursive self-improvement (RSI) may bring new risks, namely that more and more AI model training work is being completed by other AI systems. Without appropriate safety measures, AI could rapidly iterate to a degree beyond which humans can effectively supervise, causing humanity to gradually lose actual control over AI development.
The related proposal comes as concerns over AI safety are rising. Anthropic and OpenAI have both recently disclosed incidents of AI models intruding into external systems, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, and SpaceX CEO Musk earlier this month also called for slowing down AI development. U.S. President Trump, however, opposes slowing AI development and said, "Whoever wins AI wins everything."
