ChatGPT desktop begins installing Chrome extensions, 1Password can be used directly.

动察 Beating AI News: OpenAI has added Chrome extension support to ChatGPT's desktop built-in browser. Users can now directly install, pin, and use extensions, with 1Password featured in the official demo. Enterprise administrators can also deploy and manage extensions centrally.

This built-in browser and the user's own Chrome remain two separate environments. It does not automatically inherit Chrome's login status, cookies, or already-installed extensions, and requires separate configuration within ChatGPT. OpenAI's documentation shows that it now supports standard browser features such as login, multiple tabs, downloads, and extensions.

The security boundary has not been fully opened up either. OpenAI engineer James Sun stated that the Agent currently cannot directly operate extensions or read data within them. For example, a person can use 1Password to fill in passwords, but ChatGPT cannot open the extension itself to retrieve passwords.

This is also part of the continued integration of Atlas features into ChatGPT. When OpenAI announced the shutdown of Atlas in July this year, it explicitly stated that browser Agent capabilities would be transferred to ChatGPT and Codex. Now that Chrome extensions have been added, ChatGPT's desktop version is increasingly resembling a full-fledged browser.
