Pentagon's first inventory of Iran war losses: $33.4 billion spent, hundreds of buildings damaged

BlockBeats news, September 15: The U.S. Department of Defense Inspector General released the first assessment report on the Iran war on Monday. The report shows that from February 28 to June 30, attacks by Iran and its proxy forces damaged or destroyed "hundreds of buildings and structures" and "dozens" of aircraft at U.S. military bases across multiple countries in the Middle East, and that the war cost was estimated to have reached $33.4 billion as of June 29.

Among these, the U.S. Navy's regional hub in Bahrain suffered severe damage, forcing the United States to adjust its military deployment in the Middle East and use Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean as an alternative maritime logistics hub, extending the supply cycle to 14 to 18 days. The U.S. military also consumed large amounts of critical munitions stockpiles, but the specific shortfall has not yet been disclosed.

In terms of equipment losses, as of the end of June, 4 F-15E fighter jets and 1 A-10 were destroyed, 7 KC-135 tankers were damaged or destroyed, and another 7 helicopters and more than 30 drones were lost; one F-35A suffered combat damage from enemy fire for the first time.

The report also estimates that Iranian attacks caused about $184 million in damage to U.S. diplomatic facilities, and that as many as 3,500 U.S. diplomatic personnel in the Middle East were evacuated at one point. U.S. facilities in Iraq suffered more than 600 attacks, with related losses of about $157 million.

The inspectorate said that during the war the U.S. military had already begun relocating personnel, assets, and storage facilities. The U.S. military and intelligence community had also previously discussed that after the war, U.S. personnel and facilities in the Middle East could face long-term reductions.
